Public school finance bill fuels captiol debate in New Mexico

Moore Appointed Council Member After Special Meeting

Eugene F. Moore was appointed by Mayor Alan Koff to fill the vacancy created by Edward A. Diaz removal. The council approved the appointment and voted to call for bids for a new garbage truck. Edward M. Campbell resigned as city attorney causing a conflict with his role as temporary municipal judge. The council will continue paying Campbell 500 dollars monthly in his capacity as judge. A quo warranto action challenges Campbell′s dual office. Do L. Brown′s salary was set at 150 dollars monthly before election.

Teen Challenge Speaker To Visit Lordsburg Church

Teen Challenge representatives Rev Emilio Pagan and his wife tour New Mexico to warn churches about drug abuse. They speak at the Lordsburg Assembly of God on February 18 1969 at 730 pm and present the documentary The Runaway Generation about teen rebellion and drug addiction.

Court House Adopts New Weekday Hours

The Hidalgo County Court House now opens 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, with a one hour noon break from 12 to 1, same as before.

Car Truck Crash Injures Two Men Near Town

Dr. Eugene V. Rose aged 51 of Roswell and Vivian Lester Watts 44 of Irving Texas were hospitalized with serious injuries after a Wednesday crash about 9 35 near town. Watts drove the eastbound truck while Rose drove the westbound car and the impact occurred in the eastbound lane. The truck and trailer laden with steel rolled onto its side about 150 feet from the wreck before clearing the roadway. Rose as on his way to Lordsburg to explore moving his dental practice. He remained in critical condition at Hidalgo General Hospital Thursday morning.

Animas FFA Livestock Team Places Second at El Paso Show

The Animas FFA Livestock judging team finished second among 57 teams from Texas and New Mexico at the Southwestern International Livestock Show in El Paso. Mortensen ranked eighth high point individual of 228. the team also won first in the Sheep Division and topped District VI New Mexico FFA. Pete Peterson, Reporter.

Heart Fund Sunday volunteers call on Lordsburg residents

Mrs. Pete Wood Heart Fund Sunday chairman announced volunteers will call on Lordsburg residents this Sunday February 16 from two to five p.m. to collect contributions. Some workers will continue during the week. Each collector will wear proper identification. The drive aims to prevent heart attacks and strokes by funding research and public health efforts.

Vandals Break Into High School Causing Heavy Damage

Vandals entered the high school in the early hours, ripping shelves, tossing typewriters and adding machines, and damaging office equipment. Damage to machines is estimated at 3600 dollars. entry was through a window of Principal B B McAlister. Superintendent Wesley Freeburg's office avoided damage. Deputy Sheriff Jack Ellis and Officer Robert Rodriguez investigated.

Local Post To Observe American Legion 50th Anniversary

Robert Swan Post No. 30 will mark the American Legion's 50th anniversary on Thursday February 20 at 7 30 p m at the Legion Hall. Guests from the State Department will present a brief program followed by refreshments and a social hour.

The Most Rev S. M. Metzger Bishop of El Paso will be at St. Joseph's Church on Sunday February 23 to preside at 2 30 p m confirmations. Sponsors may obtain sedulas Friday and Saturday 6 30 to 9 p m at St. Joseph's Hall. Bring the child's baptism certificate. No baptisms will occur on Sunday the 23rd.
