County Shooters Win In District Hoop Shoot Title

Three Hidalgo County youths led by Joni Jackson Rachel Camaco and Charlie Ragel topped the Elks Hoop Shoot district contest in Lordsburg last Saturday. Their victory earns trips to the 1987 state finals in Tucumcari on February 28.

Sheriff Appointed to U S Customs Steering Panel

Hidalgo County Sheriff Lloyd Payne was named to a U S Customs steering committee by Major Neil Curran. The group, including four law enforcement representatives in New Mexico, will build cooperation among federal and state agencies to counter rising illegal drug flows into the Southwest. Meanwhile, 30 children from Ruidoso Alamogordo Las Cruces Silver City Lordsburg joined the Lordsburg Elks District Hoop Shoot, the 15th annual event drawing over 300 Hidalgo County youths with six advancing to district.

Montoya Begins Work at Lordsburg Soil Office

Richard Montoya, a range conservationist, joins the Soil Conservation staff in the Lordsburg Field Office. He will assist Jim Wilborn and the Hidalgo Soil and Conservation District with soil and water conservation work. Montoya comes from the Silver City office and is a 1984 New Mexico State University graduate from northern New Mexico.

Lordsburg Considers 12 Percent Sales Tax Increase

Lordsburg City Council proposes a 0.12 percent sales tax hike to fund the Field House project in Short Park. Mayor Hill favors shared burden and notes no property tax rise, while options include building or selling the vacant facility. Council moves to advertise the ordinance before adoption. The meeting also covers abandoned property, health code enforcement, and an historic railroad building appraisal for potential museum use.

Funeral services were held in Bonner Springs Kansas for Jack Gauthier 59 who died January 30 after a long illness Burial was in Elevenworth Nell Cemetery He was born in El Paso but lived much of his life in Animas He worked for National Molasses Company and was a manager at the time of his death Survived by wife Francis three daughters Sherri Thompson Roeland Park Kansas Melanie Field Muskogee Oklahoma Denise Olsen Mena Arkansas two brothers Felix and Girdon Animas seven grandchildren He was a Baptist Church member.

Lawsuit against Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Department filed

A $170,000 lawsuit filed by Silver City residents Richard and Grace Brewer accuses Hidalgo County Sheriff's deputies of conducting an unlawful search in Grant County on August 25, 1986. Plaintiffs claim seized weapons were kept, a deputy allegedly fired a gun at Richard Brewer, and that officers pursued stolen checks from Victoria Homes. The case names deputies Cavaliere, Taviton, Kessler, jailer and former Sheriff Darnell.

County Seeks Easement For Glen Acres Road

County Commissioners held a light agenda Tuesday. Resident Manuel Ramirez urged action on the impassable road to his ranch and a locked gate. County Manager Anderson said easements are sought to finish a new road that may solve the problem, with no definite solution yet. DA Lewis promised information by next meeting. The panel approved a county business registration ordinance replacing the old fee structure, and a law enforcement contract with Hidalgo County. Medicare ambulance fees will be accepted as paid in full. County Clerk Morelos recommended buying two new voting machines at 600 each to relieve precinct shortages, and the commission approved. A new pickup from Millers Chevrolet was authorized after bids from Milers and Smith Ford.
