Panthers Split With Cliff Cowups and Mountaineers

The Animas Panthers won 72 54 over Cliff Cow boys led by Dennis Massey 25 points while Tex Donaldson led Cliff with 14 in a 72 54 victory. In a B game Kurt Roark 24 and Ricky Reese 17 led Animas 60 54. Reserve defeated Animas 62 52 as Massey 16 led Animas and Bert Upshaw 17 led the Reserves. The seventh eighth grade game ended 47 29 with Reserve victorious.

Jim Kinkema Named Hidalgo County Magistrate

James H. Kinkema was appointed Hidalgo County magistrate by Gov. David Cargo to fill the vacancy caused by C. L. Brown’s death. A Republican, Kinkema operates the City Package Store and was sworn in in Santa Fe where he is receiving schooling on the position.

Lordsburg Forms Junior Police Groups For Youth

Police Chief Tony Arredondo announced the Lordsburg Junior Police will start Saturday February 14. Two age groups 12 to 16 and 17 to 20 will be formed and applications are available at the police station. The program aims to teach traffic safety and cooperation with officers.

Mimbres Water Basin extended by State Engineer

The State Engineer of New Mexico extends the Mimbres Underground Water Basin boundaries in Grant and Luna Counties. Special Order No. 110 adds adjacent areas, extending west to the Continental Divide and east to the Gila-San Francisco Basin near Tyrone and Silver City. The enlarged basin covers the Mimbres River main stem, many tributaries, and nearby ranges. Public hearing on Special Order No. 119 set for March 20, 1970 at Santa Fe, with testimony welcome from affected parties.

Unidentified Body Found Near Railroad Tracks

The partially burned body of a man about 55 to 59 years old was found north of the railroad tracks near the west city limits Monday at 6 50 p m by railroad employee Manuel S Ramirez. Sheriff Leroy McCarty sent fingerprints to the FBI for identification. The man is described as six feet tall, 145 pounds with gray hair and blue eyes. He likely burned when his clothes ignited beside a bonfire. Albert Valdez of Danny's Truck Stop reported a large bonfire nearby around 4 a m Friday February 6 with several men present.
