Joe Schatz of Rodeo told the Hidalgo County commission that EMS paramedics and volunteers are acting as doctors amid scarce health care access. He praised ambulance staff for the excellent service while urging officials to address the gap in care.
Joe Schatz of Rodeo NM addresses Hidalgo County Commissioners urging change in health care priorities and funding. He cites limited resources, past waste in road and zoning projects, and calls for a county wide committee with EMS Region II director John Gee to find a suitable doctor for the county and gather public input.
Dugan Tarango Middle School was recognized among 16 New Mexico schools at a February Quality Education Awards luncheon at the Albuquerque Marriott sponsored by the Research and Study Council. Principal Fred LaMarca led the submission as the school earned second place in the middle school administration category for its Math and Science Mysteries program. The project displays monthly in the library, prompting student-led research after selecting a mystery.
Tickets are on sale for the Lordsburg Hidalgo County Citizen of the Year Banquet chaired by Lois Howard a previous recipient. The event marks the first ceremony since 1988 and will honor multiple local residents from Lordsburg Virden Playas Cotton City Animal area and Rodeo. Nominations are invited from civic or church groups or individuals and must be mailed or delivered to the Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce by March 12 with sealed envelopes marked Citizen of the Year Nomination.
The sixth Lordsburg Gem and Mineral Show runs 21 days from February 18 to March 10 at Hidalgo County Fairgrounds with free admission. More than 100 dealers will display rocks gems fossils and arts and crafts plus 40 field trips demonstrations on lapidary arts and tree camping. Indians from the San Carlos Reservation will offer Arts and Crafts fry bread and guide visitors to the fairgrounds Visitor Center.
A Friday visit to the Hidalgo County Landfill shows a clean site with Roy Hatch of Jerry Veck’s contract crew nearing completion of a new pit. The clay-rich ground requires no lining and should last about two years. A law requires constant supervision during dumping. Valley Mercantile has a county contract to fence the pit with chain link. fencing work will start soon.
Governor Bruce King declares February 15 to 20 as Patriotism Week. The Lordsburg Elks plan activities and focus on the Pledge of Allegiance written by Francis Bellamy in 1892 and adopted by Congress in 1945, with local officials signing similar proclamations.
