County Officials Debate Sheriff Payne Dispatch Proposal
County Commissioners agreed to meet with the City Council to discuss Sheriff Payne’s plan charging Lordsburg 50 percent of radio dispatch costs and $30 a day to house city prisoners. He cites about $98,000 yearly dispatcher costs and notes 120 prisoners sent to jail in six months with $2,000 in corrections fees. The meeting is set for Wednesday night February 10.

Borregos Attend Government Day in Santa Fe
Mr and Mrs Bobby Borrego represented the Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce at Government Day in Santa Fe February 3. The group met with State Senators Benny Altimirano Maurice Hopson and Representatives Tommy Foy Murray Ryan in Rep Fys office, then with Governor Carruthers to discuss Playas Road welfare office and COG funding cuts. Ladies hosted to luncheon by senators wives attended with Mrs Carruthers. A legislative reception followed at the La Fonda in the New Mexico Room.

Montez Home Center and Building Square Grand Opening
The Montez family invites the public to a two day grand opening at 408 Shakespeare Street on Friday and Saturday February 12 and 13. A ribbon cutting at 1:00 PM Friday opens the store offering free Pepsi and Cokes and balloons for children. The new hardware and home goods shop lists small appliances Gibson ranges refrigerators gas water heaters and carpet and linoleum at special prices for the event.

Time Out film to be shown at Lordsburg theatre
The movie Time Out filmed around Lordsburg in 1987 will be shown February 23 at the local theatre per Marsha Hill, manager of the Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce. Times will be announced next week in Liberal. Residents helped on the film, with some appearing in bit parts. The Chiricahua Art Gallery in Rodeo hosts a Valentine Open House Saturday February 13 from 10 AM to 4 PM.

Judy Fisher Honored For Faithful Service
Julia Judy Fisher was honored with a retirement party at the Courthouse January 21. About forty people attended the dinner. Hidalgo County Commissioner Jerry Veck presented Judy with a plaque for twenty three years of dedicated service. Judy served in Hidalgo County Treasurer's office as County Treasurer and Deputy Treasurer for the past twenty three years. Ramona Bassa presented Judy with a gift from county employees and families. Judy is active at St Joseph's Catholic Church and treasurer of St Joseph's Ladies Altar Society. She belongs to Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and is a charter member of the Does. She is married to Edward Billy Fisher. they have a son Edward and wife Hazel and two grandchildren Trisha and Christopher.

Work Continues On Animas Gymnasium
The Animas School Old Gym roof remains under progress with North and South roof sections reroofed. Supplies for finishing the main roof arrived at Valley Mercantile, a work day will be planned, and refinishing the gym floor will follow. asbestos was removed around 1980 and current flaking is insulation. A fundraiser Enchilada Burrito Supper is set for February 16 with proceeds aiding roof work and gym improvements.

No More Saturday Window Service At Lordsburg Post Office
Lordsburg Post Office will drop Saturday window service beginning February 13 as a result of an omnibus budget act cutting about 200 million dollars from the USPS operating budget for 1988. Hours Monday through Friday will be 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with no Saturday window service.
