The Playas copper smelter, first in the United States, meets and exceeds New Mexico air standards with 92 percent sulfur dioxide capture and 0.015 grain particulate emissions. State and EIA officials credit planning and design for the environmental performance as PD expands output including sulfuric acid and elemental sulfur production.
Lordsburg Municipal Board of Education at 7 p.m. discusses Title VII tutoring program and supervision issues, calls for closer cooperation and better communication. Lordsburg City Police logged 41 calls and five misdemeanor arrests with two in protective custody. Leon Graves faced detoxification, LeRoy Palm jailed on W I charges after a one vehicle crash, and Jesus Flores cited for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Two juveniles were detained for vehicle theft and runaways, the stolen vehicle recovered. The force issued 10 citations, three to juveniles, one fire reported at Old 85 Mine, three vandalism cases including cemetery damage under sheriff joint investigation. A 1975 Ford van owned by John Cape of Albuquerque was damaged at Trail Motel and a Yucca Motel room theft with linen loss reported.

The Board To Meet The Board of Trustees of Hidalgo General Hospital will hold their regular monthly meeting at the Hospital Feb 17 at 7 p.m.
Hidalgo County Commission kept the Cotton City road closed and posted prohibitive signs. They voted to tear up the road to prevent future use and dispatched a three member non partisan group to revisit the airport and road for possible alternatives.
