Mavericks Rally Past Reserve Then Sweep Hatch Bears

Lordsburg Mavericks beat Reserve 50 04 after trailing 27 14 in the first quarter and 39 56 at halftime. Ruben Bassa led with 18 points, Tony Alvarez 16, and A Samaniego 18 for Hatch. In the B game Lordsburg won 56 30 with Sal Ortega scoring 16. Next week the Mavericks host the Animal Panthers then travel to Duncan.

Animas FFA and 4-H Ribbons at Southwestern Livestock Show

Animas FFA and 4-H youth traveled to El Paso with their livestock entries for the Southwestern International Livestock Show. Contestants earned several placing ribbons including Randy Massey 15th in heavy Angus steer, Randy Kerrell 2nd in heavy weight crossbreed, and others with top finishes from Tommy Mortensen Norman Wright Johnny Eddy Jeanette Eddy and Kerry Lynn Crum.

Dellon Cox Completes Soil Science Institute Work

Dellon N Cox of the Lords burg Soil Conservation Service nears completion of six weeks of study at Iowa State University in the Soil Science Institute. The group of 34 men from 28 states and Puerto Rico includes 32 from SCS and two from the U S Forest Service. The program, begun January 3, ends February 11.

Republicans to Meet Delegates in Hidalgo County

All registered Republicans are called to a gathering in the Hidalgo County Court House courtroom on Saturday February 12 at 2 p.m. to select delegates for the Republican State Convention in Santa Fe on February 26.

Former Governor John Burroughs, a Democratic gubernatorial candidate, will meet Hidalgo County Democrats at The Range Restaurant for coffee at 10 am Saturday February 12. County Chairman Leroy McCarty invites all Hidalgo Democrats to attend.

Lopez Draws Duty on The USS Constellation

Fireman Albert G. Lopez, USN, son of Mr and Mrs Joaquin Lopez Jr of Lordsburg New Mexico reports for duty aboard the aircraft carrier USS Constellation homeported in San Diego California. The ship recently completed an eight month 19 million dollar overhaul at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard Bremerton Washington after a deployment to the South China Sea with the Seventh Fleet in the Vietnam combat zone.

Funeral Services Held For Pioneer Resident

Funeral services were conducted at Heather Chapel Saturday January 29 for ard J Rhoades who passed away January 27 at Hidalgo General Hospital after a long illness. The Rev Don Baker officiated. Rhoades, a resident of Lordsburg for 58 years, was born at Red Rock Texas March 20 1880. Survivors include his wife Rosie Rhoades two daughters Emeline Baxter and Mary Gay and two sons Edward H and Robert R rhoades all of Lordsburg nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and one brother Jim Rhoades of California. Pallbearers were Ed Bowhar Rodolfo Chavez Bryant Winslow Gene Waites Barton Smith and J W Smith. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery.
