Lordsburg School District voters approved a two mill levy in a Tuesday election. The levy adds 106,199 to the board's annual budget, yielding 42,791 for the district and 63,328 in state matching funds each year. Precinct results shown include Lordsburg precincts 1 2 3 with 207 yes 15 no and precinct 4 in Virden with 46 yes 0 no.
February 3 burglary at Tom Jackson residence in Animas leads to arrest of six juvenile aliens after food and a loaded weapon are recovered. Chris Musquiz assisted in tracking with Lloyd Payne and Sheriff Billy Darnell. The sheriff notes slow illegal activity in the area, while several unrelated arrests are listed including detoxification, stolen plates, DWI, and weapon confiscation orders by District Judge Ray Hughes.
Superintendent Dr. Joel Price recommended retaining the three principals and director of Education for 1984 85. The board unanimously approved contracts for Phil DeFoor Henry Marrufo Gilbert Candelaria and Charles Hayes. Also approved Stone and McGee Co as auditors for the next term subject to state approval. Five bids for Dugan Tarrango Middle School football field renovation were opened with Southwest Transit Mix of Silver City the low bidder at 13440.75. CTAs Las Cruces bid 5191.64 for two Apple computers. Tony Conners bid and was accepted for the Red Rock bus route after a bid process. Levy results: precincts 256 to 15 in favor. Architectural note lists needs including roof for RVT elementary and potential discontinuation of Southside School due to proximity to I-10 and high commercial value.
Edith M. Turner of Sunshine Haven Nursing Home died Saturday February 4 1984. Born December 20 1889 in Princeton Kansas she lived in Silver City most of her life and supported several groups including Eastern Star Georgetown Chapter No 4 Rainbow for Girls Democratic Party and Grant County Assessor. Survived by three daughters two sisters in law a foster daughter in law ten grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Funeral February 7 at First Baptist Church with Eastern Star officers present, burial at Masonic Cemetery. Pallbearers listed.
The City Council will meet in Regular Session on Tuesday February 14 1984 at 6 00 p m The agenda includes approving the minutes discussing the Judge s report the gas and oil report and approving bills to be paid.
Two men were cited for illegal fuel wood cutting in the Burro Mountains by the Silver City Ranger District of the Gila National Forest. On January 26 they were sentenced by U S Magistrate John A Darden in Las Cruces to a one hundred dollar suspended fine and seven months probation. Each must cut split and deliver a cord of wood to a person in need as approved by the U S Probation Office. In 1983 the district issued 30 fuelwood citations with fines paid and about 14 cords seized. The district plans more fuelwood patrols and permit checks during the upcoming season.
