E. M. Fisher Jr. known as Billo Fisher won a six year term on the Lordsburg School District Board of Education in the February 7 election. He defeated incumbent Raymundo Saucedo 282 to 168 with Augustine L Parker at 86 votes. Fisher carried divisions 1A 95 to 41, division 16C 155 to 118, and division 2 32 to 9.
Moore and Curtis Roark were elected to six year terms in Positions 1 and 2 on the Animas Independent School District Board of Education after defeating Marcel Mortensen and Johnny Eddy by 101 34 and 106 28 respectively. W G Richards won the two year term in Position 3 unopposed.
Hidalgo County Commissioners appoint nurse Mary Frances Rice to fill the unexpired term of Sven Thyerson on the Hidalgo General Hospital board. Rice also serves as nurse for Animas and Rodeo schools. Thyerson resigned after becoming county commissioner. Board also to re bid for east courthouse fire escape after no bids previously.
El Paso Natural Gas Company is among the sponsors of TARGET, a large scale research program using space age technology to develop a marketable fuel cell power plant running on natural gas. The estimated cost is about 29 million dollars over a three year span with over 20 gas firms contributing. Pratt & Whitney Aircraft will execute the program with Institute of Gas Technology as a subcontractor under a future agreement. TARGET aims to deliver a home and business comfort package with temperature and humidity control plus on-site electricity generation while reducing air pollution.
Governor David Cargo designated February as Heart Fund Month urging residents to support the 1967 Heart Fund. The campaign runs all month with a peak on Heart Sunday February 26 as volunteers distribute literature and seek contributions in Albuquerque led by state chairman Ernest O Wold.
Mrs. Margo Fuller was elected secretary treasurer of the Hidalgo County Democratic Central Committee but declined the office due to her employment with the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Department. Minutes show she was elected and no replacement was chosen. Fuller was not present and cited state personnel act restrictions on political activity.
The Lordsburg Lions Club announced appointments at the Tuesday meeting. Dick Dockum became third vice president, Gilbert Buvens" Lion Tamer, and Frank C. Gabriel and John A. Johnson Jr. were named directors. The club also purchased six pairs of glasses for children from the sight conservation fund.
Immunization clinics at Hidalgo County Health Department will run 8 30 to 11 30 a m on the second and fourth Wednesdays each month per district health officer Dr John C Mitchell.
A large farmers gathering and HADECO directors heard Spreckels Sugar Company representatives explain beet production methods and costs. Gardner, with Mel Post and Charles Carlson, outlined a 2000 acre contract plan to ship beets by rail to Chandler Arizona. Estimated gross of 252 dollars per acre from 21 tons at 12 dollars a ton, with costs from 78.50 to 158 up to harvest. Beets planted in April and harvested mid October or November. beets tolerate bad weather better than cotton.
Funeral services were held in Santa Fe for Maj. Gen Charles G. Sage 71 who died Saturday after weeks of illness. Sage once owned The Lordsburg Liberal The Deming Headlight The Graphic and the Hatch Reporter. A 40 year military career ended as New Mexico adjutant general in 1957. He commanded the 200th Coast Artillery on Bataan in 1942. Burial was at National Cemetery, Santa Fe.
