Road Mishaps Leave One Dead in Lordsburg

Early Saturday three men and a woman were injured in two crashes near Lordsburg New Mexico. Rosa Martinez died at Hidalgo County Hospital after a rollover on Highway 70 west of town. Tho mas G Tucker was cited for DUI after colliding with a Texas Arizona Freight truck near the underpass.

Lordsburg on Route of Economy Run

The 1961 Mobilgas Economy Run may pass through Lordsburg on its Los Angeles to Chicago route from March 11 to 16. The 2000 mile six day event visits Tucson Roswell Dallas Little Rock and St Louis with stick shift cars rejoining a compact class.

Hidalgo County Leads Heart Fund Campaign

John Jeffus named Hidalgo County campaign director for the Heart Fund with Sam Gass as adviser as New Mexico joins a February drive for heart research and education. John D. District Hoop Tourney Slated for Feb 23 25 Here

A meeting with the contractor, architect, and school authorities said the new high school gym will be ready for the District 4-B tournament running Feb 23 to 25. Seedings and final plans are to be set at a Hatch meeting this Saturday. Participating 4-B schools include Lordsburg Animas Cliff Cloudcroft Hachita Hatch Hot Springs Reserve Tularosa and Weed.

CAP Suspends Search for Missing T-6 Plane in NM Arizona Rescue

Major Felix Gauthier Jr, NM CAP commander, says search for missing T-6 trainer from Casa Grande to El Paso is temporarily halted. Over three days 11,400 square miles were covered by 23 CAP aircraft for 95 hours 45 minutes, with six mobile units and 13 Army Aviation Section aircraft aiding from Holloman AFB. If found, contact CAP NM Wing at Kirtland AFB or Animal Composite Squadron.

Marine arrested in New Mexico for car theft and assault attempt

An AWOL Marine, Robert James Juneau, 19, was arrested in Lordsburg for stealing a pickup and crossing state lines. FBI agents hold him in Luna County jail on federal car theft charges with $1000 bail after police, town officers, and state police aided the arrest. The suspect allegedly tried a knife-point holdup on four women, which failed.

New Mexico Milk Cleared in FDA Residue Survey

The FDA reports no antibiotic or insecticide residues in samples of milk shipped into or from New Mexico in the period July to September 1960. R. L. Horst and Daniel E. Johnson announced the all clear after testing 82 fluid milk samples and 237 dairy products.

Saucedo Wins Re-Election to Lordsburg School Board

Raymundo C. Saucedo is reelected to a six-year term on the Lordsburg School District Board of Education after defeating Alan A. Koff 629 to 336 in the February 7 election. A total of 884 ballots were cast with 19 invalidated. long lines and cold weather kept some voters away.

Youth Suffers Gunshot Wound in Silver City

Jerry King, 19, is hospitalized in Hillcrest General Hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen after a midnight incident at 1117 So Animas St. Police say King reported he shot himself. further questioning has been limited by his condition.

Southwest Receives first Birth Defect Center

The Southwest gains its first birth defect research and treatment center at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center funded by The National Foundation through the March of Dimes. The Oklahoma site is the third in a planned national network.

County Road Planning Committee Sets 3 Priority Roads

Newly elected members met on Monday February 6 and elected H. M. Pace as chairman Frank Bowman as vice chairman and Ed Hitson as secretary. They kept the farm to market priorities: South Virden Road first Animas to Rodeo second and Banner Mine Road third. A committee including Buford Slover George Butler Geo Pendleton and T. B. Strickland will study Animas to Cloverdale for an all weather road with a special meeting to follow.

Jury awards $10,000 to Boyd Nally in retrial

A Sixth Judicial District Court jury awarded Boyd Nally ten thousand dollars in damages against Texas-Arizona Motor Freight Inc. for head injuries from an incident at the Texas-Arizona Co. warehouse. This is a retrial after a prior ruling granted a similar judgment. Counsel for Nally were E Forrest Sanders and William Bivins of Las Cruces. Texas-Arizona was represented by W C Whatley of Las Cruces.

Veterans Service Officer Visit Set for Lordsburg

Pete Torres of the New Mexico Veterans Service Commission will be in Lordsburg on Tuesday February 14 from 9 30 a m to 3 p m. The location changes from Hotel Hidalgo to the New Mexico Department of Public Health at 112 East Fourth St.
