An editorial compares New Mexico school funding before and after earmarked taxes. It notes nine month terms in some counties and five to seven months in others, with low teacher pay, scarce texts, and crumbling buildings. After earmarks and other taxes, public education policies improved nationwide standing.
A Thursday morning snowfall covered the area with nearly four inches, unusual for the region since 1948 49. The moisture from this fall adds to the county’s winter precipitation, shaping local farm and traffic conditions.
Frank Martin of the New Mexico Traffic Safety Council Commission will lead a February 14 meeting at 7 30 PM in the City Council Chambers to form the Hidalgo County Safety Committee addressing traffic and home school and workplace safety. He will speak at the Lions Club meeting Tuesday noon.
J. D. Cloudt aged 20 died at his home in Lordsburg from a gunshot wound. Coroners inquest before Justice of the Peace C. L. Brown heard testimony from wife Betsy and Sheriff Ed Jackson. Cloudt had been at a Hallmark Service Station earlier and returned home about nine oclock with a sawn off shotgun found near his body. Continuous tale continued on page.
The Band Parents Club lists a regular meeting on March 1, 1956 with a musical program. A rummage sale is set for March 16 and 17, with contact numbers Moselle Messecar 297-J and Mrs A A Richards 179 after 6 PM for rummage. A food sale is planned for March 31 with location to be announced.
Lordsburg Public Schools host the 64 painting Children United World Art exhibition at Central School. Display features works by 6 to14 year olds from about 55 nations. The exhibit promotes art as a universal language and shows international cooperation through youth led creation.
George P. Jeffus, president of W. F. Ritter Lumber Co, announced participation in Operation Home Improvement, a 1956 national push led by the Chamber of Commerce to help homeowners with materials and services to better their houses. Federal housing chief Albert M. Cole praised the program as boosting community and national welfare.
Superintendent Freeburg reported reduced federal reimbursements have dropped from eight to five cents with milk and six to three without milk. The board chose to delay any lunch price increase for now hoping higher commodity costs can offset the revenue loss.
Lordsburg dominated Douglas 55 to 41 after a first quarter edge of 15 to 6 and a 32 to 13 halftime lead. Jim Williams Oscar Diaz Mack Pace and Bill Barnes controlled the boards while Tony Rodriguez Oscar Gutierrez and Junior Morales steered relentless pressing defense.
The Chamber of Commerce sponsors Cotton Day with State College specialists for Hidalgo County farmers and families. Registration starts 9:39 A M at Elks Hall, lunch provided, women’s entertainment 1:30 to 3:00 P M. Topics include cotton quality, alfalfa strain, pumping plant efficiency, and IFYE talks with slides.
The American Legion Auxiliary met February 6 at Mrs Beatrice Fierro’s home with Mrs Angela Martinez presiding. Guest district president Mrs Margaret Locklay of Silver City reported on the mid year Conference held February 3 4 5 in Albuquerque. Eleven members attended and enjoyed banana rice cream and coffee after the meeting.
The First National Bank and the County Court House will be closed Monday February 13 in observance of Lindon's birthday.
