Lordsburg School District voters approved the continuance of a two mill levy for upkeep and new equipment. First passed in 1975, it has been renewed in 1978 1981 1984 1987 and 1990, adding 108 500 yearly to the budget. This year's unofficial count was 286 for and 54 against.
Hidalgo County Commissioners met January 31 and voted unanimously to re bid the remodeling of the Senior Citizen center after noting the 50 percent performance bond in the original bid and that bids over 25000 require 100 percent performance bonds. The panel also ordered a re bid for county jail audio visual equipment as the specs were not ready.
Senator John Smith notified Mayor Clark Smith that Senate Bill 2 passed the Senate 33 to 8 and goes to the House for discussion with Governor Carruthers as final arbiter. The zoning ordinance debate covered an 112 page document with Anita Miller outlining changes. Public hearings are scheduled February 20 and 21 at multiple locations. Sheriff Darnell requested a brief executive session with no actions recorded.
A Valentine Values Best Buys sale starts Friday at Lordsburg Drug with items from cards to cameras vitamins and peanut butter. An eight page flyer is included in the Lordsburg Liberal. The Animal Public Schools Board of Education will meet Tuesday Feb 13 at 5 PM in the Central Administration Building.
Hidalgo County Deputy Sheriff Bill Caveliere and the Lordsburg Border Patrol arrested Hipolito Sanchez and Victor Baca Olivas of Janos Mexico on February 2 for possession of 350 pounds of marijuana. They were arraigned in Las Cruces federal court and await trial. Edward W. Atter, 41, Rodeo NM, was arrested February 2 on three counts of trafficking cocaine and held in Hidalgo County Jail with bond set at 30000.
Rollin For Readin halted in Lordsburg as 47 year old Toni Cordell promoted literacy. A breakfast welcome by Kranberrys preceded a library visit with the Reading van, where 20 plus parents and children asked questions about reading help and library value. A police escorted skate to Silver City ended the event, with a Lordsburg Library gift bag and a Read New Mexico cap presented.
City leaders met January 31 with Mayor Clark Smith reporting on several items. State highway officials denied blinking lights at three locations but agreed to lights requested by City and Lordsburg Schools. A right turn at east I-10 exit will stay a yield sign after study. Traffic counts for McDonalds and curb permits for a Dairy Queen Mini Mall were discussed. Lighting repairs were noted and possible grant money mentioned. A skating rink remodel draft for a museum was shown, with portable plans and a potential $100,000 Santa Fe museum funding inquiry. UDAG payback options and loan structures were explored.
Senator Jeff Bingaman praised The Nature Conservancy for buying the Gray Ranch in Southwestern New Mexico a 321703 acre property. He urged federal protection and noted plans to pursue acquisition funding after a previous $1,000,000 request failed in the final appropriations bill.
City Council discussions by Councillor McDonald and Mayor Arthur Clark Smith consider forming a seven member commission to locate document and help craft an ordinance designating historic districts and landmarks in Lordsburg. The plan outlines appointment terms, quarterly reporting, and public input to protect cultural assets.
