Tax plans loom as New Mexico budget edges toward adjournment

Senate leaders back a 5 million cushion by trimming the federal tax exemption, aiming to fund a hold the line budget and study tax structure and school funding. Sen. Apodaca and Sen. Koran push a 50 percent tax hike to erase the federal exemption, potentially raising 13 to 15 million for a new school plan.

Mavericks Sweep District Showdowns at Reserve and Hatch

Lordsburg moved to undefeated in district play with 66 38 win over Reserve and 65 43 victory over Hatch. Speer led with 15 points in both games joined by Ortega 12 and Baisa 15 in the Reserve win. Hill’s 23 points and 11 rebounds sparked the Hatch win as Warren and Richardson reached double figures. Lordsburg B team defeated Reserve 61 42 and beat Hatch 72 70 with Hill piling 23 points and 11 boards in the last game. Next, Mavericks head to Duncan with no Friday game on schedule.

Governor Cargo Warns Hidalgo County Faces State Aid Cut

Gov. David F. Cargo warned Hidalgo County will lose 57,920 in state aid to public schools next fiscal year due to the Legislature’s reluctance to adopt a foundation financing plan. He criticized lawmakers for endorsing the approach yet refusing to enact it, saying funds must be needed and wisely spent.

Foy Powell Receives Honorary Pythian Rank

The Pyramid Lodge No 23 Knights of Pythias awarded Past Grand Chancellor Foy Powell the Golden Spur honorary rank at a Tuesday night ceremony. A pot luck dinner preceded the event with 50 attendees. Leo Cohen received a lodge services plaque, and the conferring team included John Neal and others with Mrs Jess McClean in attendance.

Ralph Burton president of the First National Bank of Lordsburg was named to fill the Lordsburg Board of Education vacancy after Frank Bowman resigned to move to Tucson. Burton serves until the February 1969 election and has held notable local roles including HADECO officer, Lions Club director, and Chamber of Commerce member.

The Animas High School Junior class will host a barbecue supper before the basketball game against alumni on Saturday Feb 10 at 6 30 p m. Adult plates cost 1 25 and children's 75 cents. Everyone is invited to attend dinner and stay for the game.
