Governor Miles urges community use of WPA funds for a 30 by 50 foot adobo style building on vacant land west of Austin's office. City sponsors plan a chamber office and meeting space for civic groups while awaiting WPA engineer guidance and approval.
The Whiskey Wizards host visiting basketball competitors in a local match at Central tonight. The lineup includes Mohen FE M Fisher Jr Estrada Marshall Fuller Bones Jo John Hall Al vaman and others. Tickets claim entertainment is guaranteed with refunds possible if money is not available.
The Church of Christ invites worship at 10:00 A M with communion and an evangelistic service at 11 00. Minister C R Reet urges members and visitors to attend Why I am a Member and bring friends to the church events.
A small crowd gathered at Valley View Presbyterian for Sunday worship followed by a ladies service and a church dinner in the afternoon. Sunday School met as usual and a baptismal sermon was delivered by the pastor. Services are held on the first Sunday of each month with Sunday School each Sunday at 2 30.
The Baptist Church at H Elmore invites all to Sunday School with service at 11 00 am and evening worship at 7 30 pm. U meets 6 30 pm and 7 30 pm for evening activities. A monthly business conference proceeds psday events focused on serving people cradle to grave.
The Chamber of Commerce reports receipt of a letter about a piece of ore from the Banner Mine to be delivered by Mr. H. P. As on his return to El Paso.
An adobe building 24 by 60 feet is being erected behind the Up-To-Date buildings to house a large kitchen and employee bedrooms. A temporary cook room is rushed to completion in the northwest corner of the lot. Structural steel framing, contractor C. M. Williams.
Bryan Hall methodist church announces church school at 9 45 am worship at 11 am with recognition of Boy Scout Week and a choir service at 7 30 pm on Wednesday under Pastor Bryan Hall.
Lordsburg couples attended a celebration in San Simon on Saturday for the opening and dedication of the new high school. Guests included Mr and Mrs C B Olney Mr and Mrs E F Sanders Mr and Mrs H F E Scofield Mrs Faye Clayton and many others.
The Methodist Missionary Society met February 2 at Mrs. George Ewan’s home with 27 present including two new members Mrs. George P. Jeffus and Mrs. Joy. Reports on Mrs. Snyder were favorable and an encillada supper planned for February 21 at 5:30 in the church undercroft. Next meeting set for February 16 at Mrs. S. M. Chase’s home with Roy Melugin leader and Mrs. J. H. Baxter handling devotionals.
Mrs Ena Walter County Director of Public Welfare returned Sunday from Santa Fe where county directors of the state gathered. The meeting covered the immediate rollout of the new merit system and changes in the forms to be used.
The Daughters of the American Revolution will select a New Mexico senior from accredited four year high schools to receive an all expenses paid ten day trip to Washington D C. The winner is chosen for dependability service leadership and patriotism with alternates named and accompanying judge oversight.
California evangelist C C Root will preach at the Church of Christ for three weeks with Wednesday Thursday and twice on Sundays. Topics include The Light of the World and Why I Am a Member of the Church of Christ. a Thursday February 15 sermon covers Sixteen Reasons Why Every Believer in Jesus Christ in Lordsburg should be Immersed. Bible School at 10, worship at 11, and 7 30 pm service.
Mr and Mrs Arthur Shoemaker and their two young sons were in town en route from Morenci to Alaska where Mr Shoemaker has accepted a position with a large mining company Mrs Shoemaker is formerly Winnie Gilbert
Lordsburg Hidalgo County gathers business leaders and Fair officials at Hotel Hidalgo lounge to discuss the 1940 Fair. President George H Cureton Secretary Harlan Black and directors join in planning events and larger Chamber of Commerce goals. A follow up meeting is set for February 16 at the Community Public Service office with all businessmen invited.
Dorothy Sharon Bartlett and Hugh M. Atkinson wed on Sunday February 4 in Las Cruces with Rev. Harold Dye officiating. The bride wore pebble crepe moss green attire with red carnation bouquet. both graduates of Lordsburg High School and plan to reside in Lordsburg.
William A. Phillips of Las Cruces died at home on Friday. Funeral services were held Sunday at Graham Funeral Parlor with Rev. Hunter Lewis officiating. A Spanish American War veteran, he had lived in Las Cruces 16 years and is survived by a widow and children. Burial took place in Las Cruces. Mr. and Mrs. Mayfield attended.
Mrs Agnea Edington county superintendent hosted the Delta Kappa Gamma group at her home with Mrs Ina Pflenger of Animal Schools. Mrs Ruth Soper Luna County Superintendent and six sorority sisters traveled from Deming. Lordsburg attendees included Mrs Luella Clark and Miss Nancy Chase with Miss T Johnston.
Sheriff John P. Cavin states Fred Carter alias R B Wheeler, 45, is in County Jail for bad checks and to be returned to Tucson. He is also wanted at Phoenix, fingerprint reports not heard. Fred Richards, 15, of San Diego has been returned home by his parents. he serves in the U S Service at San Diego.
Attorneys Frederick Sherman of Deming and George B. Graham of Denver were in Lordsburg on Monday on official business. Sherman described the trip as “just a general business” to a Liberal representative.
Mrs. Fred Gilman received word from Canadian Texas that her step father John Miller died on Saturday February. He was 88 years old.
The third Tri Arts concert sponsored by the Woman's Club featured lyric soprano Mins Annette Stahly and 18 year old pianist Roy Cooper at the High School. Mrs Harold Scofield introduced the performers. Stahly, noted for Ramona Pageant and radio work, performed light operetta selections while Cooper played Chopin and other familiar pieces. The audience enjoyed the program and was urged to attend the next concert.
The Presi dent's Birthday Ball committee thanks Blas Noche for use of the La Fiesta Club and others for help. Receipts total 176.36 with expenses 129.69, yielding net 46.67. Half remains in Hidalgo County for crippled persons. Vernon Brock and Lordsburg Liberal donations noted.
Ward reports the death of Henry Stengele 83 a respected New Mexico citizen at his daughter Mrs R W Aldrich home in Roswell N M Frank H Stengele sister to the deceased traveled to Roswell with Mrs Stengele and Harvey to attend the funeral The wife of Henry Stengele passed away years earlier.
Miss Marion Andrews representing the Crippled Children's Division of the Department of Public Welfare visited Hidalgo County this week. She checks eligible children for Carrie Tingley Hospital clinic and follows up on treated cases to monitor progress.
Lions Club met Tuesday noon with Lion Thomas J. Mayfield presiding. Four guest speakers included H. P. Thomas of the Social Security Board El Paso Lee E. Harbottle of the Boy Scouts Dallas Edward M. Read El Paso District Office and R G Treasler Denver insurance agent. Harbottle delivered a strong Boy Scouts report noting high Scout-to-leadership ratios and the large number of Scouts in the population. The club discussed highway aid and formed a committee to meet Scout officials with plans for a Friday meeting and a next week report.
Roman Kuriecian a Trade Commissioner from Poland based in Warsaw is touring the United States visiting cities between New York and San Francisco. He spent the past week in Lordaburg accompanied by his American wife from Connecticut. They express strong interest in the southwestern United States.
The office of County Superintendent of Schools Mrs Agnes Edington has been remodeled and repainted at the expense of the county school board. The Board of County Commissioners viewed the work Monday morning with pride and wished all courthouse rooms could follow the example.
Last Thursday afternoon seven teen directors of the Southwestern New Mexico Livestock Show and Fair Association met at the courthouse for a conference on the 1940 program. They set October 10 11 12 and 18 as the fair dates and formed committees to secure 600 feeder calves and organize entertainment.

Edwin DeMons underwent an emergency appendectomy at Stanford University on Wednesday. Dr and Mrs E C DeMons left Lordsburg on the noon train to be with him, and the latest report said he is progressing nicely.

Married couples with combined income of 2600 or more or singles with 1000 or more must file. Correspondence to the Collector of Internal Revenue, Albuquerque NM. Tax forms for 1949 or fiscal year beginning 1999 ending 1940 to be released January 1940 in Albuquerque. Internal Revenue will visit Lordsburg March 11, 1040 to assist taxpayers with returns.
A birthday party at the Gale home Wednesday night celebrated R H Gale turning 41. Guests included KR Gale Bill Smith William Helbig Arvil Gale Leater Gale George Hanner and Hattie Martin. After dinner guests played pitch and BR Gale and Mrs Gale won prizes.
Mrs Ruth Spann of Lampasas Texas remains in Lordsburg for an indefinite time as noted in local records with her residence and destination not specified.
Banner Mining Company provides free $1000 life insurance to employees with three months’ service. The first check was paid to Nick Trejo’s mother after a mine accident January 9, and the second to Petra Sierra, widow of Ramon De La Sierra, who died January 16. The policy honors employee loyalty and service.
