Voter registration will be held at the Phelps Dodge Mercantile in Playas this Saturday February 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 30 p.m. The session will allow those who signed up to vote to cast ballots and become eligible for the June primary.
Lordsburg officials discussed speeding and congestion around R.V.T. Elementary and Central School Main Street crossings. A safety plan includes designated loading zones, restricted unauthorized vehicles, and use of 6th Street for student pickup. A letter urged parishioners to park along the fence and drive west. The board also noted a near miss when a bus struck a car parked at the gate, with no injuries reported.
U S Representative Harold Runnels notes a 1981 DOD request for more than 10.7 million in military construction for New Mexico. Lordsburg seeks 524 000 for a new Army National Guard Armory while Holloman Kirtland White Sands and Cannon bases request funds for test tracks taxiways fuel systems and energy conservation. Hearings on the proposals are set for mid February.
District Judge Joe Galvan ruled Hidalgo County cannot be dismissed from a lawsuit filed by James McCutchan and Glen Acres Subdivision over road maintenance. The Feb 5 ruling allows phased handling and states the case may proceed as non class action first, with potential class action or indispensable parties later. The plaintiffs seek maintenance of two subdivision roads or about 75 000 in damages.
A 59 year old Lordsburg man, Ho ward Phillips, is listed in serious condition at Providence Hospital in El Paso after a January 31 shotgun wound to the left chest. He was found in a storage shed on Randall Street and transported by Hidalgo County Ambulance crews first to Hillcrest General Hospital in Silver City before final transfer to El Paso.
Hidalgo County prepares for emergency draft registration under a presidential call. County Clerk Becky Diaz says registration would occur within ten days for all residents aged 18 to 26, with sites planned at Central School and the Animal Community Center.
Hidalgo County Sheriff Gene Moore said he told state officials the local jail complex could house up to 30 minimum security prisoners from the state prison in Santa Fe if needed. State prisoners are being moved to jails and detention centers after a riot destroyed the Santa Fe facility. Moore said a state police official contacted him earlier this week and he has spoken with Sixth District Attorney Ralph Ellinwood about the matter.
State Police investigate an armed robbery at Bar T Truck Stop on Interstate 10 in Grant County around 3:30 am Monday. A white pickup drove away after a man punched an attendant, tied up a register, and took cash plus a .22 pistol. Attendant Angel Lopez, 19, reported the robber warned him the next one was loaded. Police seek a composite sketch as they pursue leads.
A Lordsburg resident, Mrs Johnnie Dunagan, urged the city council to address treated water overflowing from the municipal sewer plant onto her property. She asked for written action or a long term agreement and warned of potential legal action if no solution is found. Council members agreed to study the issue and reply in writing.

Brown a Aerospace Education Specialist for NASA from Johnson Space Center Houston He carries credentials from Indiana State Oklahoma State and California State University Chico His NASA project of an Extraterrestrial Vehicle won the 1975 Space Science Demonstration Award and is on display at Kennedy Space Center The program lasts about 50 minutes and includes aeronautics rocketry propulsion satellites probes and manned spaceflight with classroom follow ups and free public access to schools and organizations
