Mothers March of Dimes Nets For Fund Drive

Mrs. Bob Morrison heads a city wide Mothers March of Dimes drive last Friday night collecting 90.38 for the fund. The team of eight ladies canvassed districts with sitters provided by local schools and Home Ec classes. Volunteers gathered at the Legion Hall where coffee and donuts were served and coordinators from several towns assisted.

Central Committee of Delegates Meets at City Hall

The Hidalgo County Democratic Central Committee met at City Hall on Friday February 1 with Marshall presiding in the absence of Payne. They discussed electing delegates to the Democratic National Convention in Santa Fe for a two year term and petitioned the committee on several items.

CofC Membership Drive Underway

The Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce launched a membership drive led by Harber Heather and Jack McGhee. Sharpshooters C. L. Brown and Harold Scofield reported four new members since the drive began as efforts continue to sign old members and recruit new ones for a 100 percent town representation.

Illegal Transportation Of Cattle Increases Penalty

Jesse Simpson of Springerville Arizona was apprehended by Joe Brown and G A Chumbley for illegal live stock transport across the state line without NM Cattle Sanitary Board inspection. He was tried in Lordsburg before Judge A W Marshall, pled guilty, fined 75 dollars and given a 30 day suspended sentence.

Air Force Recruiter to Visit Lordsburg February 12

Air Force Recruiting Officer Tsgt C Jesse Wilkinson from El Paso will be at the Local Draft Board Office in Lordsburg on February 12 from 12:00 noon to 5:00 PM and 8:00 AM to 12:00 noon. He invites young men and women to learn about a secure future with guaranteed income benefits including retirement and medical care.

Union Department Store Opens Rear Door to Parking Lot

M. and Mrs. Leo Cohen owners of the Union Department Store announced a new rear entrance opening into the rear parking lot. A former store room door was cut and an opening created to improve shopper convenience near the post office and rear traffic.

Bennie Everett Pessons Resigns From PQ After 21 Years

Bennie Everett, a 21 year veteran clerk at the Lordsburg Post Office with prior Army service, resigns effective Feb 1. His career included Air Force service in 1942 46 and a Korea tour 1950 52. Postmaster Eugene Montague praises his work and notes his replacement lineup.

Cotton Farm Day Run By Lordsburg Chamber

LES Band and Chorus Members Head Clinic at UNM

Six band members and eight chorus members from Lordsburg High School attended the All State Band and Chorus Clinic on the University of New Mexico campus from January 31 to February 2. Directors included Clarence Sawhill and Dr. Howerton. The groups rehearsed six hours daily, performed for a 5000-seat Highlands School gym audience, and were chosen from Las Cruces auditions in December.

Lordsburg School Board Election Chooses Two Members

The Lordsburg Municipal School District No. 1 held a school election to fill two six year terms. Three candidates appeared: Mrs. Robert Harwood and Mrs. J. S. Culberson seeking reelection and Manuel S. Ramirez seeking a first term. Harwood led with 377 votes, Culberson 351, Ramirez 227 from 958 votes cast.

New National Guard Captain Takes Post as TV Clerk

Everett, newly appointed clerk in the office, is married with two children and plans to devote full time to his television business. He serves as commanding officer of the Anti Aircraft unit of the National Guard at the rank of captain.

Mavericks Host Hatch Bears In Homecoming Basketball Game

Lordsburg High sponsors its first Basketball Homecoming as the Mavericks host the Hatch Bears at 8 p.m. Lily Vasquez will be crowned at halftime with attendants Rosalie Tibbs Rebecca Tarentine Erlene Malone and Judy Clark. An assembly for the Homecoming Court and alumni is set for 2 30 p.m. Friday in the auditorium followed by a 10 p.m. dance.
