Nordisk Films of Copenhagen will produce the fictional film Time Out in Lordsburg starting mid March. Director Jon Carlsen with production director Bo Christensen and American supervisor Colleen Garett lead the unit, with Railroad Avenue and nearby ranch and mountain scenes planned.

Three resignations dominated Tuesday night as Kristi Hamblem, a Chapter I teacher at R V Traylor Elementary, announced Feb 13 exit, and secretary Peggy Esquivel left by month end while Maxine Thorpe plans retirement at year end. Voters in Lordsburg and Virden backs a two mill capital improvements levy with 294 to 61 in Lordsburg and 47 to 11 in Virden. Incumbent Lance Williams and Fritz Placencia retain seats. Placencia unopposed with 311 votes. New hires include Lorie Kerr for RVT Chapter I and part time girls athletics help. Angel L. Lopez hired as custodian.

Born July 8 1920 in Lincoln New Mexico she retired from New Mexico Department of Health and Social Services and earlier worked for Lordsburg Public Schools. Survivors include daughter Debra Welsh three sisters and one brother. Memorial services were held January 31 at 2 00 p.m. in Arcadia Funeral Home Chapel Phoenix.

Bruce Passes Away In California at 64
William Leon Bruce died January 27 at the V A Hospital in Long Beach California after a long illness. He served starting in December 1940 with the 200th Artillery and was a prisoner of war for 42 months. He is survived by his wife Jean a son three daughters six grandchildren and a sister. Funeral and burial were held February 2 1987 at Riverside National Cemetery with Fort Ord Military Guard.

District Hoop Shoot Set For Saturday
The District Elks Hoop Shoot finals take place Saturday morning at Dugan Tarango Middle School at 1 a.m. Twenty five free throws decide the district title and a spot in the State Finals in Tumcumcari. Lordsburg hosts for the second straight year with about 300 Hidalgo children competing and 30 shooters from Las Cruces Silver City Alamogordo Ruidoso and Lordsburg. The national program touches 3,000,000 children.

Joni Umphres Celebrates Eleventh Birthday
Joni Umphres marked her 11th birthday with a home party on Sunday February 1 aided by nurse Chris Richie from University Medical Center Tucson who helped restore hope after a July 1985 stroke left her body impaired. Despite three brain surgeries the family found faith and Chris encouragement to persevere. Joni later walked and rode a horse on her birthday proving the nurse’s counsel that she could do anything she set her mind to.
