Advisory Group Plans School Bond Petition In Lordsburg

James Culberson chairs the School Building Advisory Committee which voted to circulate a petition demanding a bond election. The plan aims to fulfill state requirements after last spring’s failed proposition. Architect Jay Hill advised along with board members and local staff. Pre school classes at Wilson report 20 morning and 27 afternoon pupils.

Motel Operator Victim of Armed Robbery

A masked man robbed Travelodge Motel operator Mrs Fred Slate around 11 p.m. Sunday, taking about $100. A suspect was tracked to Deming by a statewide broadcast but Mrs Slate could not identify the thief. Police noted the man had about the same cash amount and a pistol resembling the weapon used.

Animas Girl Killed After Fall From Truck

Alice Morris 11 of Animas died when she fell from a pickup being driven by her stepfather Herman Herring 38 on a ranch road south of Las Cruces. The horse trailer being pulled by the truck ran over her after the fall. She expired at the scene around 12 30 p m Saturday.

Henry Alvarez Named To Unexpired Lordsburg School Board Term

Enrique Alvarez was appointed Tuesday evening to the Lordsburg Board of Education unexpired term vacated by Ralph Burton resigning to move to Oklahoma. Alvarez, a Lordsburg resident and sales manager at H Bishop Lumber Co., was among several candidates considered by the board.

Lt Governor Candidate Visits in Lordsburg

Orlando V. Gallegos a retired DoD official and Democrat candidate for lieutenant governor visited Lordsburg last Friday meeting citizens. He may announce his candidacy after finishing his state tour and says Democrats can win in November with unity. His focus is economic development benefiting small communities.

Gonzalez Receives Second Army Commendation Medal

Sp4 Jiame T. Gonzalez earned his second Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster on January 24 1970 for meritorious service. He serves with the 56th Signals 3rd Brigade 9th Infantry Division and is the son of Mr and Mrs Pedro F Gonzalez of Lordsburg.

Christmas Seal Drive Extended to March 1

The New Mexico Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association will extend the Christmas Seal campaign to March 1 as the drive remains more than $8,000 short of the $90,000 goal. Statewide letters inform patrons the drive is still open and funds support tuberculosis emphysema and air pollution programs.

Two Ticket Fields In City Election

Two complete slates filed by the 5 pm deadline for the city election. Incumbent Mayor Alan A Koff leads the Progress ticket with alderman candidates Eugene F. More La Van Strawn Eugene P. Noce and Ramon S. Sanchez. The United Ticket lists Betty H. Lazar for mayor and four alderman hopefuls. Registration closes February 16 with new rules on name usage and precinct eligibility.

Panthers Sweep Lordsburg and Clifton in Weekend Games

The Animas Panthers beat Lordsburg 60 56 at Maverick Gym then defeated Clifton 73 35 at Animas. Dennis Massey led with 20 points against Lordsburg and 18 against Clifton while Steven Hill and Ricky Massey added 19 and 17. The Animas B team won 68 44 and 58 57 in tight finishes. Manuel Dominguez scored 20 in the first and 23 in the B game.

Former Lordsburg Resident Consuelo Nevarez Dies

Mrs Consuelo Nevarez a former Lordsburg resident died Monday February 3 in El Paso Texas where she had lived for 20 years She is survived by relatives in the area and is mourned by friends and neighbors.

Steven McGhee Commissioned Into Army Engineers

Steven A. McGhee son of Mr and Mrs Donald A McGhee was among eight young men commissioned into the Army Corps of Engineers at Colorado School of Mines ceremonies led by Colonel Cecil C Baldwin. Chaplin Carl P Oberleiter gave the prayers and benediction January 23 1970 with President Orlo E Childs and several officials present.
