Voters in Lordsburg Mu District No. 1 gave a heavy show of support at the recent school board election. Frank Bowman appears set to serve while Harber Heather’s leadership is praised. The piece notes Lincoln’s birthday and urges merchants to honor the flag.
Volunteers collected donations Tuesday evening for the Mother March of Dimes fund. The Hidalgo County chairman Vic Reay and assistants led the effort at The American Legion Hall with many captains and helpers distributing doughnuts and organizing workers for the drive.
Ray Gordon of Pyramid Valley brought in two loads of rough rice corn. The Growers' Association cleaned the corn for a market in Mesa. The corn will be ground into tortilla meal by Rosita Products, Inc.
In Animas Valley a group of farmers and the Evans Vegetable Company arranged a spring lettuce contract. Evans will supervise growing to harvest, then harvest and truck to a Lordsburg vacuum cooling tube. Over 80 acres planted with plans for more before February 15, aiming for price advantages via freight savings.
E P Ripley led a push in Santa Fe for House Bill 48 requiring 33 1/3 percent of permanent school funds to be invested in GI FHA and farm mortgage loans. He argued current fund returns of about 2.2 percent would be boosted as Congress raises GI rates and the fund grows by over 1,000,000 dollars monthly.
Fire of undetermined origin destroyed barns chicken pens and pig stalls at the Morris ranch. Mr Morris said they were fortunate in saving their livestock as the blaze began about 8 p m Tuesday night.
Frank Robinson spent the weekend with his niece and nephew Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Soper in El Paso.
Mrs Emma Marble Muir widow of rancher John T Muir dies Tuesday in a local hospital. Born 1873 in Virginia City Nevada she moved to Shakespeare New Mexico in 1902 and ran the 190000 acre Muir ranch. Surviving daughter Mrs Mary Dee Kipp and three grandsons. Funeral services held at Heather Chapel and Euster Maxon Funeral Home El Paso. Burial Evergreen Cemetery El Paso.
The report recalls a proposed bill to create free narcotics distribution stations in each public welfare district with a $150 000 General Fund appropriation. The author doubts passage and vows to oppose new taxes without cutting waste. A few thousand sacks of pinto beans were loaded on boxcars for overseas shipment. The A T Gonzales Company purchased all beans on hand. Growers report slow sales recent months due to large crops in Idaho Colorado and Mexico.
Pvt. Jack Bryant was elected chaplain at a Civil Air Patrol meeting. Pfc. Tommy Earney assigned cadet reports on an airplane and its mechanism. Cadets will collect papers Saturday morning Feb 7 at 9 a.m. Call Tommy Barney at 439-W for donations.
Lordsburg voters turnout set a record as Harber Heather and Frank Bowman won six year terms on the Lordsburg Municipal Board of Education. A total of 946 ballots were cast with Heather 549 Bowman 515 Koff 388 Ramirez 12 White 80 and Chase one write in. The crowd filled the polling place all day and counting took three and a half hours. Late in the day officials worried about ballot supply but 1000 ballots sufficed after a call to the attorney general.
City council approves resolution to cooperate with El Paso Natural Gas Co Southern Pacific Railroad and E J Short estate. Water system transfer discussed and old lights along Railroad Ave renovated with C P S wiring. Fire department answered 26 calls in 1958 with total loss of 957 dollars.
