Doug Houser Named New C of C President in Lordsburg
Doug Houser manager of the Best Western Skies Motel was elected president of the Lordsburg Hidalgo Chamber of Commerce at a January 27 board meeting. New board members Dixie Kerr Jim Worthan and Richard Searle replace expired terms. Announced activities include a February 13 Valentine Dance, reinstating the Citizen of the Year Banquet on March 20, and a Memorial Day Southwest Jamboree chaired by Clark Smith. Houser invites all members to participate as the chamber plans seminars potlucks and luncheons. Postmaster Kent Simmons will leave Lordsburg for Clifton Arizona.

A total of 766 voters turned out in Lordsburg and Animas to elect two board members per district. In Animas Ellis Massey and Sanford ran for Position 2 with Ellis winning 133 votes, Massey 93, Sanford 82. Viccelli was unopposed for Position 4 with 249 votes. In Lordsburg Lowery and Salinas vied for Position 5. Lowery led with 275 to Salinas 168. Allred was unopposed for Position 4 with 349 votes. Voters approved continuation of the two mills since 1975 by 356 to 50.

Ilda McCommis Passes Away At Sunshine Haven Rest Home
Ilda McCommis died January 28 at 3:30 PM at Sunshine Haven Rest Home. She is survived by daughter Arlene Humble of Albuquerque and three sons: Max of York, Marvin of Deming, and Jimmy of Las Cruces, plus many grandchildren and siblings Cleo Rosson, Arless Wright, Lucille Wilson, Iala Maling, and Bonnie Nichols. Funeral arrangements are with Baca's Crematorium in Deming, New Mexico.

The 2nd annual Coyote Calling Contest took place in Animas on January 30 with 11 teams, 26 participants, and teams from Deming, Silver City, Hurley, Playas, Las Cruces, Animas, Las Lunas, and El Paso. Clay Peterson, Dewey Chadborn and Orlaid Hughes won first with 6 catches and $212, while Duane Morris and Inez Grant were second with 5 catches earning $137. Morris also won $50 for heaviest coyote and proceeds supported the Animal Chapter of the People For the West.
