New Mexico banking, voting age, and redistricting debated

Rep. William J. Upton backs broad branch banking and 18 25 voting rights with duties. He cites countywide branches and holding companies shaping New Mexico banks. Redistricting would add Catron and Dona Ana counties with two judges and raise legislator per diem to 40 dollars.

Martin Appointed To Road Body

Governor Bruce King appoints Democrat Robert C. Martin to the State Highway Commission, to replace Holm O. Bursum Jr., with Kenneth J. Towles of Hobbs reappointed. Martin's term runs six years, subject to Senate confirmation. Martin, former Lordsburg banker and 18 year state representative, will represent the district including Catron, Socorro, Grant, Hidalgo, Luna, Sierra and Dona Ana counties.

Chester R. Barnes Dies Suddenly in Lordsburg

Chester Raymond Barnes born January 29, 1905 in Berlin New Hampshire died suddenly January 29 1971 in Lordsburg. He grew up in New Hampshire, worked for Civil Service in the U.S., retired in California 1962, spent years in Lordsburg and the southwest. Survivors: daughter Joyce DeChamp San Francisco. sons Don Barnes Grass Valley California and Stephen Barnes Saucelipto California. Burial in Berlin New Hampshire family plot.

Veterans' Service Officer to Attend Lordsburg Event

Jose M. Salas Veterans Service Officer from NMVSC will be in Lordsburg at the Welfare Office on Friday February 12 1971 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to assist veterans and dependents with veterans affairs.

Child Struck by Car Leaves Boy in Serious Condition

Steven Barley five year old son of Mr and Mrs Lee J Barley of 1201 South Main Street was seriously injured Friday at about 3 40 pm when struck by a car driven by Julian Robert Gomez eighteen in the 400 block of West Second Street. Gomez said the child darted from between two parked cars. The boy received emergency care at Hidalgo General Hospital and was airlifted to Providence Memorial Hospital in El Paso. He is reported to be out of the coma.

Culberson Elected Vice Chairman of FCBW

William D. Lakey of Sayre Oklahoma was elected chairman of the District Farm Credit Board of Wichita at the annual reorganization meeting. Ser wood Culberson of Lordsburg New Mexico was elected vice chairman. Lakey served as vice chair in 1970 and succeeds Leo Paulsen. Culberson brings long service on the board and active involvement in area agricultural groups. The Farm Credit Board governs the Federal Land Bank of Wichita the Federal Intermediate Credit Bank of Wichita and the Wichita Bank for Cooperatives serving Kansas Oklahoma Colorado and New Mexico with combined loans exceeding 1.4 billion as of 1970.

Local Man Accepted for Teaching Post in Lordsburg

Raul Arambula son of Flora Arambula has been accepted by the Lordsburg Board of Education as social studies teacher at the junior high. In Tuesday's meeting Bow soda Stiles reported Arambula is doing very well and there are no objections to him.

County Ambulance Service Report Details Activity

Since taking over in November the Hidalgo County Ambulance Service has answered 33 calls with trips to El Paso Tucson and Las Vegas New Mexico. Sheriff Leroy McCarty urges calls to 542-9181 or 542-9458 and asks agencies to notify before ambulances leave the old City Hall fire station. A grant of 11006 funds no new vehicle yet and limits to one active call and four patients. Volunteers operate the service with no pay. about 1000 dollars in hand and 213.62 collected so far.

Assembly Of God District Meeting Hosts In Lordsburg

Lordsburg Assembly of God Church hosted the monthly District Fellowship meeting. Rev. Floyd Grant spoke in the morning and Rev. James Trevent spoke in the afternoon. Women served a bountiful noon dinner, and Pastor Atkinson thanked helpers and new families contributing to church work.

Kay Black of Las Cruces Drove 44 installed as deputy supreme president with Ruth Abernathy as deputy supreme conductor. Las Cruces officers assisted include Millie Warden Mo Oliver Elsie Dickey Myra Ortega Mary Heatherington Beelen Fickes Gayle Wallace. Lordsburg officers installed include Geri Amin president Liz Barker first counselor Pat Palos senior counselor Millie McCullogh junior counselor Romi Renteria inner guard Ruby Warren secretary Daphene Kimbley conductor Faye Moore Myrtle Moore trustees Shirly Oliver color bearer No 1 Robbie Ward attendant No 1. James Culberson and Moralez Win School Board Seats

In the Lordsburg School District election Mary Louise Moralez won position one and James Culberson Jr. won the two year term. Henry Alvarez ran unopposed for position two though seven write ins occurred with Gilbert Buvens receiving the most at eight. Moralez totaled 214 votes, Culberson 424 to Parker 130, with write ins including Pilar Meza and James McCutchan. Precinct tallies show Moralez-dense support across precincts while Culberson led in several precincts. The result changes the board to include two women among 17 statewide members. Petra Baerantit remains as a holdover.

Jackson and Godfrey Elected To School Board

Decrge Jackson Jr and William G Godfrey were elected to the Animal School District board in a Tuesday election. Jackson won the four year term with 86 votes, while Godfrey captured the six year seat with 64 votes defeating Faward Fibrock and Vanita Hateh. Godfrey replaces William A Swift who did not run.

Mrs D Kimbley to Serve on Registration Committee

Maurine Poulos supreme president of Benevolent Patriotic Order of DOES in Sarasota Florida has appointed Daphne Kimbley past president of Lordsburg Drive No 197 to the registration committee of Grand Lodge 1971. The convention will be in Omaha Nebraska to celebrate 50 years of DOES. The order originated in February 1921 in Omaha and will mark its year there.
