Sincere appreciation goes to all contributors in Virden for the March of Dimes drive. The campaign raised 5.02 in donations through an effort featuring food and entertainment, marking the most successful drive yet. Continued on page 7.
The Band Parents Club reports a $349.25 contribution toward their $650 goal with earlier donations from Lions Club Romney Produce Methodist Church Lordsburg Woman's Club and Sigma Phi sorority plus concert proceeds and a magazine drive. The group thanks supporters for aiding the project to purchase portable risers.
Notice calls on local businesses to register for an upcoming event day at the Elks Lodge. The style show is at City Hall the cotton farm program will be in the Hall and the barbecue at the Court House with full details to follow in next week's issue.
The First Nations Bank Community Public Service City Hall and Hidalgo County Courthouse will be closed Friday February 12.
The Lions Club five faces the Lords burg school faculty in a hotly contested charity game to benefit the March of Dimes. A preliminary between High school B and Junior High teams precedes the main event with a Las Cruces skating act canceled. Admission offers door pay and half cent per pound live weight at the door.
The Mavericks lost 59 to 45 at Cliff Friday after a rough first half, with Smith 12, Maxwell 11, Ruiz 9 in limited minutes. Dinwiddie and Stanley led Lordsburg with 15 and 12. Saturday the Mavericks defeated the Virden Eagles 58 to 47, avenging an earlier loss, as Ruiz boosted the late surge.
The Mother's March of Dimes for Polio in Hidalgo County yielded 500.21 from a city canvass last Friday. Organizers expect a fuller report next week as county totals are still being tallied.
Mayor James H. Baxter proclaims February 18 as CO DAY to honor Hidalgo County cotton, noting its economic impact and superior quality. The proclamation credits the Lordsburg Chamber of Commerce for sponsorship and emphasizes the cotton sector’s importance to agriculture, commerce, and local livelihoods.
About 750 high school students from Lordsburg attended the 10th Annual State Music Festival January 28 29 30 at New Mexico A&M College Las Cruces. All State Chorus members Betty Bradford Barbara White Jane Chase Del fina Jimenez Bill Rice Bill George Bob Williams. All State Orchestra Patsy Crouch. All State Band Laura Yacomo Ginger Dunkerson Kathleen Ray Joy Tibbs Yvonne Martinez Maura Rico. Conductors were Clarence Sawhill Orlando Barrera and Dr David Foltz. Sponsors Mrs Thelma Ross and Mr Roger Brandt accompanied by Capt and Mrs John Bradford provided transportation.
The New Mexico Motor Club reports on a national study of high school driver education. It cites 1 315 000 trained drivers earning 38 800 000 this year and 388 lives saved with 13 580 injuries prevented, across 6 300 high schools in 48 states.
Tonight the March of Dimes hosts a basketball game at Central School gym. Expect family friendly entertainment and community talent in a lively fundraiser.
Roger Brandt, director of bands at the high school, has been invited by the State Department of Education to assist in revising the State Music Guide. He is one of twenty music teachers selected for the project at Highlands University this coming summer.
A local notice promotes tonight’s March of Dimes game at Central gym promising a fun evening and urging attendance to support the cause.
The Blue Moon Bar thwarted an attempted robbery last Monday at about 10:30 pm when proprietor James Paulos fought the would be burglar, Charles Carey, and drove him off. Carey struck Paulos with a whiskey bottle, but Paulos held his ground, sustaining cuts and bruises as Carey failed to take the register. Carey hid in the bar’s walk in cooler until arrested by Patrolman W A Winton.
Plans for the Southwestern Championship Rodeo at the El Paso County Coliseum run February 10 to 14 with a busy arena schedule. Top specialty acts include Karen Hansen contortionist Buff Brady and Clark Schultz with his ball kicking mule and bucking Model T Ford. A scheduled cutting horse contest will feature top horses from the Southwest and beyond.
