In a Tuesday evening USO program at Camp Re Jon Hall Mercedes the Marvelous Mystic and Helene One presented a mentalist act. The Amazing couple engaged the audience as they guided listeners to think of a musical yond they heard, with Mercedes reading minds to select a piano piece for the auditor renamed to Stan tone and performed blindfolded.
The two cheerful waitresses behind the newly opened lunch counter in the main exchange are Mrs. Frank Bacon, wife of Pvt. Bacon, and Mrs. Roy C. Lee, wife of Pvt. Lee of the 310th.
Smartly dressed officers wives rode a bus to the commissary last Friday for shopping then had hamburgers and coffee at the lunch stand. The group included Mesdames Roscoe Baker W P Churchill J C Safford Thomas Brown A J Warren C E Jack R D Cappa H C Dater F F Northman R E Eirsman and children Robert and Nella Fay. Capt and Mrs J O Saffold and son Albert left for El Paso while Capt Saffold and Capt Warren head to Ft Custer Michigan. Mrs Safford and Albert plan to visit relatives in El Paso and return Sunday to Lordsburg.
Captain Dockum spent the past week in El Paso attending meetings and inspecting facilities. He met with local officials and officers to discuss security and logistics.
Lordsburg sensational basketball players won 86 to 44 against the Deming Air base team Friday night at the camp recreation hall. Fr iday at 8 pm Duncan faces the army team at the post recreation hall. Sgt. and Mrs. Bryan Perrett left for El Paso for medical treatment at Beaumont Hospital for a serious back injury.
Over the past week a 27 foot extension was added to the post library in the recreation hall. The expanded library now holds over two thousand books.
The American Red Cross reports weekly sewing quotas being met as volunteers like Mrs. Myrtle Tenney at Virden and Mrs. Leroy Evans group at Road Forks contribute. Jane Jones, 83, has made six sweaters for service members and three for her grandsons. Mrs. E. C. DeMoss assists weekly with button holes. others sew at home due to childcare.
Mr and Mrs J T Hood of Douglas visited their son Allan and Mrs Hood over the weekend.
Hidalgo county treasurer Mrs. Katy Hall resigns to join husband Dee Hall who will reside permanently in Phoenix for a government contract. County Commissioners accepted her resignation February 1 and appointed Mrs. Mertice Brooks to replace her. Brooks delays deputy appointment while Hall remains briefly. Pat Ewing praised for aiding collections since last August amid Hidalgo's strong 1940 tax collections record.
The Methodist Church plans an 11 o'clock Sunday worship with a duet by Harry Rosenstein and Dr C B Austin. The pastor will preach on Hitler and Dagon, referencing the Philistine idol and ending with a note on the fishy part left to him. The sermon promises a thought provoking message and uplifting experience.
Post master Eugene Montague hosted a Wednesday luncheon at the Hidalgo Grill in Bandera Texas honoring his brother banker and wool buyer Frank Montague. The event featured stories from Frank who, with Gene, belongs to one of six wartime Montague brothers and noted sons in the armed forces.
County agent Hudson announces three meetings next week to promote greater produce growth. The sessions will be held Tuesday in Cloverdale, Wednesday in Animas, and Thursday in Virden.
H. S. Grimes of Banner Mining was in town over Sunday. He reports Mrs. Grimes is in Washington with their daughter and son in law Captain Stewart Mark in the armed forces. The granddaughter is also in the capital as an attraction.
State director of National Defense C. J. Boyd arrived at Lordsburg airport with Mrs Boyd and H W James president of Silver City Teachers College after flying in from Hurley. Boyd, an expert pilot, travels to save time in moving between districts.
The Lordsburg Hidalgo Library board met to adjust hours starting February 8. Open Mondays to Fridays 2:30 to 6:40 p m and Saturdays 10 a m to 12 noon. January new books include Road to Fulfillment Alfred du Pont Beneath Another Sun The Robe and the Gay Sisters. Members present were Mesdames Bethel Fuller Hazel Buvens Jennie Gass Mathilde Johnson Hazel Ewing and Pearl Gauthier.
Mrs A J Inderreiden of El Paso renews old ties this week while tending mining interests in Grant county. Her husband Mr Inderreiden recently died after a long illness. She follows Captain Eddie Rickenbacker’s wartime exploits and recalls Frank Luke of Phoenix credit for downing German planes.
The past week saw bond sales of 2505.25 dollars in bonds and 755 dollars in stamps. Outlying schools contributed 26 dollars for the week.
The regular monthly Episcopal Church service will be in the Woman's Club building next Sunday at 7:30 with Rev. George Wood officiating. Bishop Stoney is recovering and plans to be in Lordsburg on March 7.
Bob Poindexter, dean of CPS plant engineers, is highlighted in The Communicator January issue with a portrait and family photos. The piece notes his popularity, his son Lt Billie Poindexter in the air corps ferry command recently flying to Africa, and mentions his wife and Mrs Fannie Thwaits Poindexter of Lordsburg with their three daughters.
Frank Weldon and Marvin Hoggett presented a 106 pound nugget of pure manganese from the Hoggett property south of Animas. Government inspectors are examining the claim as Weldon and Hoggett’s weights differed slightly from estimations.
Frank Yee, a Silver City merchant, has taken over Dudley Robertson's Piggly Wiggly. Yee will open with a large stock of goods carried by the store while Robertson stays briefly to help start the transition. Note the store's advertisement in this issue.

Miss Lucille Bradberry became the bride of Pfe Benny G Bishop of Austin Texas on Saturday evening January 20 at 9 o'clock. The ceremony was performed by Bishop Robert Mortensen at his Virden home with Mrs Thomas Crum and J Glenn Mor rill as attendants. The bride wore a light blue suit with turf tan accessories and a blue outfit. Mrs Bishop is a Lordsburg High School graduate employed by the post office. The couple currently reside with the bride's parents.
The USO committee met at the K P Hall Wednesday evening and conducted routine business. Officers elected were Chairman Roy Melugin, Vice Chairman Moselle Messecar, Secretary R E Buvens, and Treasurer Exa Barton. Executive committee to meet early next week to appoint committees.
Tom Watson the Deming Chamber of Commerce secretary resigns to lead the rent control division of the OPA in Hidalgo and Luana counties. He met Sharon L. Hatch and will visit weekly, opening an office with the War Price and Rationing Board where Dorothy Singer serves as secretary. Landlords in Deming Lordsburg are urged to register properties promptly.
Pirlekley of the First National Bank reports the Lordsburg mohair pool passed through his bank and out sold any pool in New Mexico or Arizona. The Bandera Texas firm Ingenhourett Montague bought the entire run totaling 748,798 pounds with top bids in the two states, signaling strong prices for local mohair growers.
Evelyn Williams sister of Ralph Clark and Andrew G. Watters, a member of Uncle Sam's armed forces, married Wednesday morning before Judge Peter J. Palmer at Picacho Arizona. The bride formerly served as secretary of the Lordebure Chamber of Commerce.
The USO club room announces next week's hostess lineup with daily shifts. Friday features Mrs. Cohen and Mrs. Conner, Saturday lists Mrs. Heather and Mrs. Scott, Sunday Mrs. Scofield, Monday Mrs. McCabe and Mrs. Clayton, Tuesday Mr. Ravens and Mrs. RE, Wednesday Mrs. Barton and Mrs. Koff, Thursday Mrs. Green.
The Monday and Tuesday sales at the cantonment totaled 584 dollars. The M. P. BE. G. Co under Captain Thomas Brown led the event with 150 dollars in bonds and 110.25 in etampa amid a thin pay day.
Ed Slade of the Grazing Service will speak at the Lorda burg Chamber of Commerce Monday at 10 am. He invites anyone interested in mines to highway roads and those with a producing mine or approved prospect to attend.
Mrs Faye Clayton and Mrs Don McCabe spent several days in El Paso last week, traveling together and enjoying the visit.
Hidalgo county committee chair Gene Montague reports the net total from the Infantile Paralysis ball Thursday is 440.48 with more to come. He thanks all committee members and supporters for a meritorious effort. Sir Moore made the large cake and deserves wide recognition for the event.

The Bh Sharp Music Club will stage a program at the Methodist Church at 8 p m on February 9 featuring Jerry Lou George Frances Bundy Arabella Hill Rebecca Avolos Carol Krewson and Virginia Wilkinson with assistance from others. Guest artists Myre Percy Krewson in character readings and Toni Salas will sing a variety of songs for a pleasant entertaining evening.
