Boy Scout Week marks the anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America observed from February 6 to February 12 with 2300 boys and leaders participating nationwide. The crusade aims to strengthen the arm of liberty and recruit new scouts ahead of the National Jamboree at Valley Forge Pennsylvania from June 30 to July 6.
The PTA meeting at the high school auditorium was led by principal R. V. Traylor with State Patrolman John Bradford speaking on safety. He advised on fire and poison responses including rolling on the ground and using blankets to extinguish flames.
Dr J H Baxter announced plans for a February 3 benefit basketball doubleheader at the high school gym. The 7 pm opener features the Animal Midgets versus the Lordsburg Midgets, followed by an 8 pm Poverty Flats versus Lordsburg National Guard matchup for the March of Dimes.
Fred Ratliff of Marion Illinois supreme chancellor of the Knights of Pythias made an official visit to the local temple on Tuesday evening. A 6 30 dinner at the Pinto cafe preceded a gathering at the K P Hall where he spoke on citizenship and the state of the nation warning against communism and urging vigilance in civic and fraternal life.
The Liberal corrects last week's story on Jack Morgan speaking to the Lions Club. The 5 percent figure refers to administrative and collection expense, not legislative or state purposes, and the correction clarifies the misattribution.
The Liberal party announces two weekly columns to host public letters on the Highways 79 and 80 controversy in Lordsbur r. Each side may submit signed short letters on the subject with no personalities, and advertising remains at regular rates.
Returns for the Hidalgo county March of Dimes drive show a total of 161.73 from Animas and card sales plus 75.40 from dances and cake sales. Dance profits at La Fiesta and Railroad clubs reach 71.48, with lamp prizes awarded to R V Aguilera and James Curetoy. Remaining reports from Rodeo Steins and Virden are expected.
Three high school dramatics students provided the Lions club program. Scott Spencer read Poe and Pat Corey plus Louis Vermillion presented a skit about teaching golf. The jury found Bill Kimbley guilty and Judge Dick Rice imposed a June 5 basketball game ticket assignment.
A $20,000 shipment of jumbo shrimp for a Chicago distributor became stuck Tuesday on a narrow Cloverdale road below Guadalupe Mountain. Rescue crews used cables and heavy timber to stabilize and realign the trailer and road, with the truck continuing to Chicago on Friday after repairs. The incident followed days of jacking, digging, and regrading to free the rig.
The Lordsburg High School senior class presents the comedy Speck on Tuesday evening February 21 set at a dude ranch patio in southwestern New Mexico. New Mexico author Chase H. Webb of New Mexico Western College wrote it with Myra Kerr Malcolm Hill Arabella Hill Mary Altuna Scott Spencer Micaela Arandula Benny Frias Thelma Richins James Brown Rebecca Avalos Jack Cochran Barbara Martinez and Miss Pfister directing.
A Wednesday evening social at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Earle Kerr celebrated the birthday of Mrs. C. B. Austin. Attending were Mrs. Austin, Mr. and Mrs. Nat Gammon, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Austin, Mrs. Emma Scofield, Mrs. Thelma Ross, and Mr. and Mrs. Kerr.
About 40 men from Lordsburg joined to form an Elks lodge here with members from Silver City and Las Cruces. A six o’clock dinner on Saturday February 4 at the La Fiesta club will feature Hank Thomas of Silver City and the state organizer. Thirty prospective members have shown interest.
