Voters go to the polls on Tuesday for the local school board election. Candidates from several wards seek seats, with issues on curriculum and funding shaping the race. Returns may determine school policy for the coming year.
Five southern New Mexico counties Catron Grant Hidalgo Lincoln and Sierra gain federal aid after December floods. About 20 million in grants and loans expected. programs include USDA aid SBA loans unemployment compensation IRS tax provisions and quick refunds. FDAA coordinating officer appointed. local briefings and record keeping urged for reimbursements.
Edward Elbrock lifelong Animas resident seeks another term on the Animas Board of Education. A graduate of the Animas school system he attended New Mexico State University for two years and now owns a ranch near Animas. He also has interests in Valley Mercantile Inc and Elbrock Water Systems. He says the district has grown recently but enrollment has leveled off in the past two years.
Jim Richardson of Playas announces candidacy for position five on the Animas School Board. He is a maintenance mechanic at Phelps Dodge with prior Morenci experience, father of two middle school children, and advocates open meeting minutes in the newspaper to keep citizens informed while aiming to raise education quality and collaboration among teachers, board members, and parents.
Mike Shaw of Playas runs for the Animas School Board against Edward Elbrock. Shaw, lacking teaching experience, touts interest in education, critiques sports overemphasis, and proposes expanding vocational programs and better teacher retention. He is Plant Engineer for PD Hidalgo Smelter, with a family in Playas. Elbrock aims to reframe the bond issue toward grade school needs.
Terrell Jackson of Playas a Hidalgo Smelter foreman with five years’ residence runs for the Animas School Board seat. He argues a policy making board should follow up decisions and ensure policy administration, citing extensive school management experience. He notes overcrowding, urges a 5 to 10 year plan and a system tailored to the needs of all students, while praising current administration’s efforts amid growth.
Governor Bruce King announced a disaster assistance plan opening an office in Silver City to help farmers and ranchers file applications for flood relief funds. Carter declared Catron, Grant, Hidalgo, Sierra, and Lincoln Counties as disaster areas with about $20 million in damages. State officials pledged $500,000 in aid as Dallas DAA regional staff prepared to visit New Mexico to confer with officials.
Hidalgo County law enforcement abandoned a stakeout after locating about 300 pounds of marijuana left at a desert site eight miles from Lordsburg. Sheriff Gene Moore said a tip led to the discovery three quarters of a mile off Interstate 10, in five burlap sacks worth an estimated $40,000 wholesale and $150,000 on the street. The department plans to seek a court order to destroy the stash.
Hidalgo County voters head to polls on Tuesday February 6 to select new trustees in Animas and Lordsburg districts. Lordsburg seeks one seat with Gilbert Mora and Art Malott as challengers. Animas offers two seats with incumbent Edward Elbrock facing Michael Shaw and another incumbent Dale Caudle competing with Jim Richardson and Terrell Jackson. Polling locations include Lordsburg Central School gym Virden Community Center and Animas sites Rodeo Catholic Hall Animas Community Building Playas Community Center and the Animas Superintendent Office absentee ballot option. Voters registered by December 26 may cast ballots between 8 am and 7 pm.
The House Transportation Committee gave a speedy do pass on a bill to fund a new rest area at the Gary Interchange on I 10 west of Lordsburg. The Appropriations and Finance Committee must approve. Rep Von Rue Crawford led the push with input from David Santillanes and Highway Secretary Fred O Cheskey. The $650000 facility would be funded from highway department budgets and include a tourist information booth and restrooms.
