Edward Elbrock Seeks Reelection To Animas Board

Edward Elbrock lifelong Animas resident seeks another term on the Animas Board of Education. A graduate of the Animas school system he attended New Mexico State University for two years and now owns a ranch near Animas. He also has interests in Valley Mercantile Inc and Elbrock Water Systems. He says the district has grown recently but enrollment has leveled off in the past two years.

Desert Marijuana Stash Found Near Lordsburg Abandoned

Hidalgo County law enforcement abandoned a stakeout after locating about 300 pounds of marijuana left at a desert site eight miles from Lordsburg. Sheriff Gene Moore said a tip led to the discovery three quarters of a mile off Interstate 10, in five burlap sacks worth an estimated $40,000 wholesale and $150,000 on the street. The department plans to seek a court order to destroy the stash.

Hidalgo County School Board Elections Set Tuesday

Hidalgo County voters head to polls on Tuesday February 6 to select new trustees in Animas and Lordsburg districts. Lordsburg seeks one seat with Gilbert Mora and Art Malott as challengers. Animas offers two seats with incumbent Edward Elbrock facing Michael Shaw and another incumbent Dale Caudle competing with Jim Richardson and Terrell Jackson. Polling locations include Lordsburg Central School gym Virden Community Center and Animas sites Rodeo Catholic Hall Animas Community Building Playas Community Center and the Animas Superintendent Office absentee ballot option. Voters registered by December 26 may cast ballots between 8 am and 7 pm.

Rest Area Bill Approved for Gary Interchange Project

The House Transportation Committee gave a speedy do pass on a bill to fund a new rest area at the Gary Interchange on I 10 west of Lordsburg. The Appropriations and Finance Committee must approve. Rep Von Rue Crawford led the push with input from David Santillanes and Highway Secretary Fred O Cheskey. The $650000 facility would be funded from highway department budgets and include a tourist information booth and restrooms.
