The Animas school lunch program serves about 80 students daily and wins strong support from parents, students, and the community. Volunteers donate food and labor, keeping lunches affordable at fifteen cents while allowing the Class B program to discontinue carrying lunches.
Two candidates have filed for election to the Lordsburg Board of Education Eugene Romney Jr a local businessman co owner and manager of Romney Produce Co and resident since 1944 with five children in Lordsburg schools and Mrs Sherwood Culberson wife of a prominent cattleman long time area resident with two children in Central School and active in PTA and VJA groups The biennial election to fill two six year terms will be held February 6
The 1951 truck and trailer license plates have arrived and are now available at the County Treasurer's office. Damon Donen, the county treasurer and license collector, announces that March 2 is the deadline for old plates.
The City Police Department moves to a new 10 by 12 foot building on Railroad Avenue opposite First National Bank. Alderman Leo Cohen promoted the project to improve weather conditions and workflow, with 24 hour operation and indoor heat. Current officers are Chief Lulo Sanchez and Patrolmen Ruiy Chavez, Jay Large, and Albert Butler.
Much needed rain fell Tuesday night as storm clouds dumped .58 inches in Hidalgo County per F H Daniels at the S P station. Jack Summers at Road Forks port of entry logged .65 inches and Jack Bailey of Animas district noted 1 to 2 inches. By Thursday morning temperatures dropped to around 20 degrees with a cold wind and light snow flurries.
Lordsburg voters select two members for six year terms on the Lordsburg Municipal School Board District No. 1. Elected candidates must file by Feb 2. voting runs 8 AM to 6 PM on Tuesday Feb 6. current terms of Mrs S H Gass and Mrs P M Ewing expire.
The March of Dimes drive has been extended to Friday Feb 9. Those who have not donated or wish to give more should send donations to First National Bank Harold Scofield bor Harber Heather.
Rev and Mrs Robert S Bubb will host a farewell service on Friday February 2 at 7 30 P M as they transfer to the Assembly of God Church in Deming. Since arriving in Lordsburg the Sunday School grew from 17 to 98 with a 25 member church roll. The note adds the move and ongoing church work.
On Saturday February 10 the Boy Scouts will take over city government for one day. Scouts elected as Mayor Lloyd Payne Chief of Police Juan Estrada City Clerk Jimmie Brunner Deputies Eddie Brown Oscar Gutierrez Highway Patrolmen Junior Diaz Eugene Romney III Allen Gordon Supt of Water and Gas Works Richard Wischkaemper. Citizens’ cooperation will be appreciated as the boys gain unique experience in running city affairs.
Jack Morgan, Hidalgo County School Tax Auditor, announces changes in tax collection. Interest will no longer be waived and will be collected where applicable. Penalty will be charged except in rare cases with a director review. Instructions issued by Peter Cable, Director of the School Compensating and Luxury Tax Division.
The Lordsburg Lions Club presents Aunt Silly at the High School Auditorium February 9 and 10 at 8 PM. Proceeds go to sight conservation. The three act play features 150 locals led by Dr. J H Baxter as Aunt Lilly and R B Rice as a pompous Senator with other prominent participants.
Paramount western Branded stars Alan Ladd Mona Freeman and Charles Bickford filmed at AVA ranch and San Simon valley Portal. The story follows gun law era cattle rustlers and a staged heir to Richard Lavery with the kidnapped son’s brand mark.
