Soil Compaction: Effect on Crop Growth and Plant Symptoms
The Soil Conservation Service warns that soil compaction affects seed contact, root growth, water infiltration, and erosion. Excessive compaction delays germination, slows growth, and causes nutrient-related leaf discoloration. Diagnosis is tricky since drought and nutrient deficiencies can mimic compactness. The most visible sign is a shallow root zone and crusted seedbeds.

Food price trends and farm income in 1979
Prospects for smaller farm price increases and slower marketing costs point to retail food prices about seven to seven and a half percent higher in 1979, with grocery prices around seven percent and restaurant prices near eight percent. Weather, supplies, and inflation measures could push gains to six or ten percent. The report notes large grain supplies and limited beef growth, alongside stable red meat and poultry output, while advising soil management to combat hardpan and soil compaction for higher yields.

Crop and Livestock Outlook Amid Adequate Moisture Across State
Moisture was adequate statewide with the northwest plateau western mountains and southern desert receiving more. Harvest of grain sorghum cotton and pecans continued as weather allowed. Cotton harvest resumed midweek and was active in dry areas about half the crop remains unharvested.
Forecast of improved corn prices and record feed grain use
U S farm prices for corn may average 2.00 to 2.15 per bushel this marketing year, slightly above last year. New Mexico specialist Robert Coppersmith forecasts a record 211 million metric tons of feed grain production, with final harvest likely in 208 to 214 million tons. Carryover could total a record 251 million tons, while total feed grain utilization may reach 199 million tons, up 3.5 percent, driven by favorable margins for livestock and poultry. Current prices stay above a year ago due to strong exports, demand, and on farm holdings, despite record production and ample supplies.
