A large audience revels in festive school performances across several rooms. Students from pre K to 8th grade sing, recite, and perform plays centered on Christmas themes with decorated trees and handmade ornaments guiding the celebrations.

Nuisance taxes removed from new revenue bill

Washington reports the new revenue law signed by the President. It retains the 4 percent normal tax on the first 4000 of net income after credits and 8 percent thereafter, lowers the top surtax to 50 percent, and raises personal credits to 2500 for certain filers. It repeals excess profits tax from 1922 and imposes a 5 percent corporate tax.

The assessors of New Mexico adopt a county by county schedule for valuing live stock for the year two to ensure uniform taxation. They state the schedule results from a conference with live stock organizations and individuals and aim for just, equitable assessments for the state and taxpayers.

Tax plan repeals broad excise taxes and preserves key levies

The bill repeals many excise taxes effective January 1922 on items such as musical instruments sporting goods chewing gum portable electric fans and fur articles. It retains taxes on telegraph and telephone messages tobacco jewelry and other specified broker shipowner and entertainment taxes while removing nuisance and luxury taxes from soda fountain goods cosmetics perfume and patent medicines.

Big Hoss Race Set Near Lordsburg

Sam Olney and Frank Wewerk plan a mile and a half north of Lordsburg on January 16 for a big hoss race. Frank will ride Cowboy while Olney’s rider is not yet announced. The bet is $150 a side with $300 to the winner as horses from across the region gather for the event.

McHalfleys Entertain At Ranch Dinner Party

McHalfleys entertained Mr and Mrs L P McHalfey at a Tuesday dinner party at their ranch home. Holiday colors red and green decorated the table with a fruit centerpiece and candles. Place cards named Eddie Allen Elizabeth Burton James Kingston Garretson and the host and hostess. A social evening featured music from a player piano.

Prominent Mining Man John H White Dies at Last Chance Mine

John H White, a respected mining engineer and superintendent at the Last Chance mine, died at age 46 after overwork and illness. Born in England, he was a U S resident for years and a member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Funeral at the Methodist church Thursday at two, Rev Vanderpool officiating, burial at Mountainview Cemetery.

State Assessors Laud Work of Tax Officials

County Assessor J. D. Jordan praised the state tax assessors after meetings. He joined the committee on by laws and helped shape district divisions for assessment. A livestock valuation schedule was set, considering market proximity rainfall and other factors. The Hidalgo County schedule follows.

J oe Burns of Animas reports he rebuilt a ten room hotel adjoining his store beside the railroad after last summer’s flood collapsed the previous building. The new hotel now accommodates customers in the south side location.
