RC&D Council Meets in Deming for Wind Solar Project

The Southwest New Mexico RC&D convened December 19 in Deming to approve an industrial committee led wind and solar energy project for Grant County. Anita Morton outlined three phases including an educational lab, local production, and energy self-sufficient homes, with housing options from Western New Mexico University. The meeting also endorsed a feasibility study for a demonstration range in Grant County and discussed health, recreation, sewage treatment, and forest service plans affecting regional projects.

Taxes On The Rise In Hidalgo County

Hidalgo County residents paid about 365 per capita in taxes last year, part of a national rise that saw state and local governments collect 121 billion dollars. The study notes inflation and welfare costs push rates higher, with Arkansas lowest at 342 and New York highest at 894 per person.

Illegal Search Ruling Upheld By High Court

New Mexico Court of Appeals upheld Hidalgo County District Court ruling suppressing marijuana evidence from an automobile search. Patrick Tate Coleman and two others were detained after a speeding stop. consent followed by coercion led to an illegal warrantless search despite claims of probable cause. The car remained at the sheriff's office with occupants under arrest, negating emergency justification.

Overholt N Named To Committee In State Housing Council

H R Overholt of Lordsburg is named to the Governors Regional Housing Authority in State Planning District V. He also joins the Housing Committee for the Southwest New Mexico RC and D Council. Other appointees include Sonny Brownfield Deming George Adams Quemada Jason Thibodeaux Glenwood Frances Dominguez Deming Albert Botts Silver City and Patsy Sullivan Gila Thibodeaux named committee chairman.

White Christmas covers New Mexico with widespread snow

A winter storm blankets southern and central New Mexico with an inch or more of snow in Lordsburg and other cities while El Paso sees four inches. The National Weather Service warns of hazardous driving and predicts a few snow showers Thursday before clearing Friday.
