The Mavericks two teams split wins over Hatch with the A squad winning 70 42 led by David Estrada 17 points and Arthur Estrada 14. The B team edged Hatch 44 40 with Gilbert Isto leading scoring 12 as Jay Payne 8.

Cloud Named Adjutant in New Mexico Legion

Chief Gonzales announces Drew Cloud as new Adjutant of the New Mexico Legion. Cloud, a Carlsbad native educated in Gallup, served 11 1942 to 1945 in North Africa and Italy, then worked at International Potash. He held multiple public posts and chaired the 1956 Star Convention in Carlsbad.

Muscular Dystrophy Drive Totals $138.08

Lordsburg Fire Department and Rainbow Girls collected $94.50 in a house to house canvass for the Muscular Dystrophy fund last Thursday evening with transportation provided by the Fire Department. Business houses contributed $43.38, bringing the total to $138.08.

Poindexter Wins Who's Who Jackpot This Week

The weekly Who's Who drawing at Wright's Bakery attracted 207 slips. Fannie Poindexter was named in the entry, with Kirby and Scofield among multiple winners. The box will be at Gulf Servicenter for last minute slips, and the drawing occurs Wednesday Dec 23 at 2 00 p.m. ahead of the Christmas issue.

Lordsburg Lights Up For Christmas Spirit

Lordsburg shows festive Yuletide atmosphere with downtown and residential lighting. Businesses display indoor and outdoor decorations as a Christmas tree stands in the town center and lights were set to turn on last night. Local music comes from Demon Dunagan Music Co Re creation Center and Barneys Cabinet and Repair shop. A limited number of homeowners joined a lighting contest run by the Chamber of Commerce. only ten entry blanks have been received with a Dec 19 deadline. Prizes include a $25 savings bond for first place and smaller awards for other placements.

Grant Files Suit In Water Dispute

A writ of mandamus was filed in district court by Charles W. Grant and Billie Louis Grant against the City of Lordsburg its mayor and the Board of Aldermen. The complaint seeks restoration of water service to the Grants property and damages for the discontinuance. Judge W T Scroggins issued the writ after Judge H Wearie Payne disqualified himself.

New Auto License Plates On Sale

New automobile licenses began sale on December 15 with a tab to be affixed to existing plates this year. New Mexico residents with out of state plates must buy NM licenses. Front and rear plates are required. duplicates are needed before a 1960 tab is issued. State Police urge public cooperation to ease compliance.

Home Lighting Contest Drawing To A Close

The Christmas Home Lighting Contest ends Saturday December nineteenth with entries due at the Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce or by mail. Displays are judged Tuesday December twenty second between 6 30 p m and 10 p m with three tourists serving as judges. An entry blank appears inside this issue. Awards include 1st prize a 25 00 Savings Bond 2nd prize 10 00 and four 500 third prizes.

W W Smith Wins Trip To Acapulco

In Lordsburg Elks held a Cerebral Palsy Fund event drawing winners for a Cadillac car and a trip to Acapulco Mexico. W W Smith won the Acapulco trip and Phil Blakley of Ruidoso won the Cadillac. The fund drive raised 1166 dollars and 25 cents with 160 NM State Cerebral Palsy cases noted. Local organizers include Bill Miller Dennis Kerr and Richard Allen.

Fire Safety Emphasized in Lordsburg Elementary

All teachers will reinforce fire safety before Christmas vacation. Hartford Fire Insurance materials and junior fire marshal resources will be distributed to grades 1 through 5, teaching seven basic rules to keep Christmas trees and decorations safe.

Christmas holidays of the Lordsburg schools will begin at the close of school Friday and continue until the beginning of classes Monday January.

State Police To Set Up Road Block

A 12 hour road block will be set up Thursday December 24 between Lordsburg and Deming by the State Patrol. Blocks will operate across New Mexico and neighboring states to reduce highway accidents during holiday travel and on New Year’s Eve. Officers Henry Houston and Guy Dunivan will lead 6 am to noon shifts. Joe Rutland and Steve Lindsey will cover 12 to 6 pm.

Student Council To Aid With Road Block Funds

Mr. B B McAlister said the high school Student Council will assist with the Road Block on December 24 and December 31. Surplus treasury funds donated by merchants last year will buy the cookies for the event and details will follow.

Bill Kimbley Elected Chamber President for Coming Year

Bill Kimbley was elected president of the Lordsburg Hidalgo Chamber of Commerce by the board of directors last Monday. Leo Cohen was chosen vice president and Marguerite Codding was re employed as secretary manager for the upcoming year. Kimbley succeeds Wesley Freeburg who led the chamber the past year. The new officers will take office at the beginning of the year.
