Lordsburg High School announces its promising start with three decisive wins 63 to 32 over Reserve and 70 to 26 over Cliff and Hachita. The team faces Hatch Bears at home tonight at 7 p.m, varsity game to follow, amid low crowd attendance.
Ole Santa from the North Pole will arrive at Lordsburg airport at 10 am on Friday December 19 and visit Saucedo's Market until noon. He will tour Central and Wilson schools from 1 to 3 pm, then return to Saucedo's until 7 pm and give away a table lamp, radio, tricycle, and a doll.
Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Murphy Cousland were conducted at Heather Chapel with E. L. Anson officiating. Born 1880 in Silson and later a longtime Lordsburg resident, she left nine children, six deceased, and is survived by two daughters, one son, twelve grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and a sister in Silver City.
Levier Gardner conducted a Court of Honor for the Duncan and Virden District of the 3-G Council at Virden Mercation hall. Troop 24 led the Pledge, with awards to Virden and Duncan scouts, merit badges presented, and a Cook Stick awarded to Troop 24 as the winning troop.
The Lordsburg Hidalgo Chamber of Commerce board elected Wesley Freeburg president for the coming year at a Monday meeting. He will assume office January 1, succeeding Jack Morgan. B M Kimbley was chosen as vice president. The group plans to decorate downtown with small Christmas trees along Railroad Avenue medians using existing wiring.
Upland cotton growers will vote on Monday December 15 to decide if marketing quotas will apply to the 1959 crop. Eligible voters include all who produced upland cotton in 1958. A two thirds yes vote sets quotas, with penalties on excess cotton and a choice between regular farm allotments or increasing acreage by up to 49 percent. If more than one third oppose, price supports drop to 50 percent of parity for eligible growers. Acreage allotments continue regardless.
The Lordsburg Elks announce their annual Christmas dance at the Elks Hall this Saturday evening from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Attendees are asked to bring a can of food to help prepare Christmas baskets for the needy on Christmas Eve. All Elks and guests are invited.
Central School third and fourth graders stage a carol program titled The Coming of the King directed by Mrs Thelma Ross. Two performances Wednesday December 17 at 1 30 p m and 7 30 p m feature processions carols and choir numbers with guest pictures and teachers listed.
Tuberculosis strikes all ages with half of new cases under 45 and one third of Americans believed infected. New U S cases in 1956 reached 90 465 with 14 000 deaths. Jacob Reis proposed Christmas Seals in 1907 and Emily Bissell organized the first sale netting 3000 for TB fight. Seals mailed again this year.
Mrs Eleanor Cochran license clerk announced plates go on sale at her office on Monday December 15. Office hours run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ex service men can claim exemption with their certificate of eligibility.
Animas American Legion Post sponsors a dance on December 20 at the Legion Hall with music by Forrest Desk and his Gully Jumpers from 9 until closing. The public is invited.
A one car crash 11 miles north of Rodeo Hidalgo County last Saturday morning killed Nacho Tellez 24 and his son Nacho Jr 3. Driver Julio B Tellez 28 and several relatives were injured and hospitalized. Police investigated with help from Sheriff E N Jackson and deputies noting high speed and possible tire failure before the vehicle left Highway 80 striking a culvert.
Theory High School plans a winter band concert this evening at 4 p.m. in the Central School gym under director Roger Brand. The program includes Catalina March, Autumn Silhouette, Blue Tango, Welsh Folk Song Suite, Toccata for Band, Its Beginning to Look, and other pieces with students Olivadoti, Walter, Anderson, Ostering, Hall, Erickson, Davis, Farrell, and Dooley. Parents and friends are invited to attend.
