The Observation Post announces a new feature by Bob Collins titled Corner on Cotton. The column targets cotton farmers and debuts on page four this week. The paper notes local council activity, upcoming Christmas decorations, and a new Shell service station downtown improving town looks.
Fourth District VFW met in Silver City with Commander Benavidez presiding and Betty Bolling leading the auxiliary. Sr. Commander Hogeboom spoke on the Veterans Service Committee and cabinet level veterans affairs secretary proposals were discussed. Next meeting planned for Bayard December 13 at 7 p.m.
The Elks Lodge hosts its annual memorial service this Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. Exalted Ruler Roddy Poindexter invites the public to attend.
Lordsburg High School Student Council planned staffed and operated a coffee stand at a roadblock between Lordsburg and Deming to aid the State Police during Thanksgiving. Members including Wesley Freeburg Ralph Craig Hinolito Aquino Charles Davis John Harvell Melvin Phillips Johnny Mack Elms Gary Corbell Richard Atkinson Louis Rodriguez Johnny Mann Raymond Sanchez and Eddie Avalos served coffee and donuts from 1 PM to 9 PM Wednesday. Donations from many local businesses supported the effort and some funds remain to be used for another project.
Manuel R. Sanchez of the north town brings to The Liberal an egg over three inches long and six ounces with a double interior shell composition. He reports two yolks and whites between shells, calling it a natural freak. The egg came from his flock of 45 red hens.
Dr W H Sellers, a Southern Pacific doctor now in Lordsburg, has been elected to the New York Academy of Science for his notable contributions to the field. The recognition reflects his scientific ability and standing.
An apology notes delays in publishing due to typesetting issues and promises to catch up next week, asking readers to bear with the staffing setback and referring to the persistent Linotype trouble.
Mrs. Jose Jacques suffered a fractured leg and contusions while Mr. Jacques was bruised after a rear end collision on Highway 70 80 ten miles east of town. The pickup rolled to its side and was dragged 150 feet. Jacques claims he was traveling toward town when the semi struck him, while the truck driver says Jacques pulled onto the shoulder and cut in front. Physical evidence shows the impact came from the rear.
A Nov 28 reception at Virden Recreation Hall honored Mr. and Mrs. Jorth Richardson following their Nov 21 marriage. Roy Crum served as MC. Miss Sylvia Smith provided piano entertainment. The couple, now living in Tempe, received wedding gifts as they begin housekeeping.
Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce president Jack Morgan announces committee appointments with Dr. H W Sellers as annual banquet chairman Frank Bowman as membership drive chairman and six others including Jack McGhee John Johnson Sr and G P Jeffus as committee members. McGhee to chair the fund raising committee. Additional members to be named later.
The newly organized Brownie Troop under Mrs Charles Williams will collect toys for underprivileged children on Tuesday December 9. A house to house canvass will visit West 5th Penn South Main South Chester South High East Railroad Ave and Fast 6th streets. Toys will be given to the local Elks for Christmas Eve distribution.
Preliminary hearing for George L. Staub Jr of Las Cruces proceeded in Deming on armed robbery charges for two service station holdups in Lordsburg and Deming last Saturday night. Staub bound over to District Court with $7500 bond after the Martinson's Service Station incident where about $70 was reportedly taken.
Lloyd Washburn Leon Evans and companions traveled from Cotton City to Portland on November 19 to hunt elk in Wallowa County. They spent five days rafting 50 miles along a river, camping nightly, and hunting by day. While cow elk and deer were plentiful no bull elk was seen. they returned to the Estes home for Thanksgiving before heading home.
Mrs Green and Lewis returned from Los Alamos after Thanksgiving with her daughter and family. She joined a party that greeted the Queen of Greece Frederika and her daughter, with grandson Tommy serving as Explorer Scout honor guard. Mrs Green watched Sputnik III pass overhead, describing it as a twinkling star.
City council at its regular meeting voted to shift police department operations to the mayor for reorganization including hiring and firing. Mayor Alan Koff to consult with the police committee. most aldermen supported the move while Hill opposed and Black abstained. Also discussed were a temporary police chief and a $2095.70 bid for a new police car with later delivery. An Anti-Litter ordinance and a replacement ordinance No 181 over No 180 were approved, correcting an error in the previous street use fee ordinance for Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Co.
N. M. Morrison, vice president and manager of the First National Bank, attended the first annual Farm and Livestock Credit Conference at State College. The event, sponsored by the New Mexico Bankers Association with New Mexico A&M, featured Morrison as panel co-chair and member of the Agriculture Committee. He noted he has information on Cotton Plans A and B and offered to assist farmers seeking details.
