Unusual Mexican Band Delights Clifton Entrada Crowd

Mayor Pete McMillen and Clifton citizens hosted a Tuesday street concert featuring a 25 member “Alley Rats” band. The musicians used water pipes, faucets, tin lids, and a pasteboard drum, creating a unique ensemble that drew many Lordsburg residents to the Clifton Entrada events August 31 to September 2, including Labor Day shows.

Methodist Church Sets New Year Goals For Community Work

Teachers return to Lordsburg for a new school year with a mix of veteran and new staff. New faces include Mr. Brown the science teacher and assistant coach, Miss Geren in Home Economics, Miss Shannon in English and dramatics, and Mr. Jernigan in art. Old hands include Mr. Lewis, Mr. Masters, Miss Fitch, Miss Fairly, Mrs. Ross, Miss Chase, Miss Harper, Mrs. Wells, and Miss Fisher. Most worked the summer and others were on leave.

Daily Vacation Bible School totals 75 enrollments

The Church of Christ hosted a two week Daily Vacation Bible School with 75 students. Girls made cookery and tea towels while boys worked on manual arts airplanes. A Sunday program will display notebooks and sand tables and feature the play The Ten Virgins Then and Now.

Death of Rosa Schwarz noted in Silver City obituary

Rosa Schwarz of Silver City, sister to Julius Schwarz of Lordsburg, died Thursday morning last week. A pioneer resident, she led in the Order of the Eastern Star and Woman's Club and supported her home city. Born in Germany in 1869, she came to America about 30 years ago joining sister Mina Schiff. Funeral at Elks Temple Silver City with Rabbi Wendell Phillips officiating under Eastern Star. Ball bearers included Melvin H. Willkie Meeting Draws Crowd in Las Cruces

Mr and Mrs H E McCray and others attended a Democratic Willkie for President Association gathering in the Las Cruces Armory. Ex Governor William Murray gave the principal address urging Democrats to back the Willkie ticket. A barbecue followed as about 2000 people reportedly attended.

Wilson School gains improved offices and refreshed rooms

Superintendent Mayfield announces major improvements at Wilson School for the new term. The principal’s department is partitioned to provide a private office for the superintendent while maintaining easy access for students. Contractor Jack Heather led the work, with custodian W. W. Scott remodeling most rooms and Dennis Bartlett refinishing floors and walls. The Ritter-Walker Company funded new flag displays and patriotism initiatives and Harvey Jernigan, new manuel training and art teacher, assisted with carpentry.

Immigration Service to Maintain District Office Here

Officers Best and Mann of the Immigration and Naturalization Service visited Lordsburg and announced they will be stationed there soon. A close watch on all transportation facilities in and out of Lordsburg will be part of the new defense program. Both officers will relocate with their families and expect permanent arrival next week.

Navy recruiters in Lordsburg visit during the week

A. W. Adams and M. W. Spence of the U S Navy spent part of the week in Lordsburg to recruit. They arrived Wednesday at noon and left Thursday evening, operating from the county agent's office in the courthouse. They plan monthly visits for two to three days, with advance notice in the Liberal.

Two Men in Custody in Hidalgo County Case

The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office holds Max Romert in custody after a Las Cruces native was captured by a deputy setup. Bamert, once released from the New Mexico State Insane Asylum, is to be recommitted amid dangerous tendencies and transferred to Las Cruces authorities. Joe Williams, 24, of Long Beach California, is also detained over a car theft tied to Lordsburg with action pending by Hidalgo County District Attorneys next week.

Tommy Hall Injured in Rodeo Practice

Fourteen year old Tommy Hall son of Mr and Mrs Dee Hall was thrown from his pony at the race track while practicing for the Fl Paso Herald Post Kid's Rodeo. He was taken to Lordsburg Hospital with painful but not serious injuries and hopes to compete in the weekend rodeo.

Hidalgo County Gets Another Surfaced Road

Hidalgo County will gain another oil surfaced road under the 1941 42 highway program announced by Governor John F E Miles The Lordsburg Silver City highway is included along with Deming Hatch and a U S 70 connection at Tularosa The program plans at least 2511 miles of highway construction statewide over two years with 622 miles grade and drain 871 miles gravel surfacing and 161 miles oiling

Percy Brown Family Vacation Highlights Western Trip

Mr and Mrs Percy Brown and children spent two weeks touring from Lordsburg to northern New Mexico fishing at Fe Vado Dam then to Peyasa Springs in Colorado for swimming and fishing. They then visited Salt Lake City Provo and Richfield Utah including Fish Lake before returning home with the Paynes.
