Mayor Pete McMillen and Clifton citizens hosted a Tuesday street concert featuring a 25 member “Alley Rats” band. The musicians used water pipes, faucets, tin lids, and a pasteboard drum, creating a unique ensemble that drew many Lordsburg residents to the Clifton Entrada events August 31 to September 2, including Labor Day shows.
The church outlines aims for a new year starting in October, including debt reduction, budget adherence, and stronger worship. It seeks broader fellowship, youth education, and Christian training to build character and prepare for life beyond.
Minister Percy Krewson invites members to 10:00 a.m. services and 11:00 a.m. on Sunday with a Bible School program at 8:00 p.m. A group photo will be taken of Bible School alumni. A Labor Day church picnic at 3:00 p.m. will travel to the mountains.
Teachers return to Lordsburg for a new school year with a mix of veteran and new staff. New faces include Mr. Brown the science teacher and assistant coach, Miss Geren in Home Economics, Miss Shannon in English and dramatics, and Mr. Jernigan in art. Old hands include Mr. Lewis, Mr. Masters, Miss Fitch, Miss Fairly, Mrs. Ross, Miss Chase, Miss Harper, Mrs. Wells, and Miss Fisher. Most worked the summer and others were on leave.
The Church of Christ hosted a two week Daily Vacation Bible School with 75 students. Girls made cookery and tea towels while boys worked on manual arts airplanes. A Sunday program will display notebooks and sand tables and feature the play The Ten Virgins Then and Now.
Rosa Schwarz of Silver City, sister to Julius Schwarz of Lordsburg, died Thursday morning last week. A pioneer resident, she led in the Order of the Eastern Star and Woman's Club and supported her home city. Born in Germany in 1869, she came to America about 30 years ago joining sister Mina Schiff. Funeral at Elks Temple Silver City with Rabbi Wendell Phillips officiating under Eastern Star. Ball bearers included Melvin H. Porterfield G O Gwin Sr L R Whitmore Ben Barker Edgar Bibo and C G Berry. Mr and Mrs Schwarz of Lordsburg attended.
Senatorial candidate Burton Roach visited Hidalgo County voters this week as part of his campaign for the Democratic nomination in the Shoestring District.
The Hidalgo County Schools will open Tuesday September 4 1940. New staff include R J Taylor principal and Marvin Cowan coach Animal School Ina Pflueger Lor aine Weatherby and Katherine Kemp Rodeo School Katherine Richards and Pamela Nicholson The Cloverdale teacher is yet to be chosen A bus drivers meeting is set for Friday at the courthouse with a briefing on a Silver City conference and yearly instructions A general teachers meeting follows Saturday at ten in the Superintendent Mrs Agnes Edington office with luncheon guest that day.
Mr and Mrs H E McCray and others attended a Democratic Willkie for President Association gathering in the Las Cruces Armory. Ex Governor William Murray gave the principal address urging Democrats to back the Willkie ticket. A barbecue followed as about 2000 people reportedly attended.
Superintendent Mayfield announces major improvements at Wilson School for the new term. The principal’s department is partitioned to provide a private office for the superintendent while maintaining easy access for students. Contractor Jack Heather led the work, with custodian W. W. Scott remodeling most rooms and Dennis Bartlett refinishing floors and walls. The Ritter-Walker Company funded new flag displays and patriotism initiatives and Harvey Jernigan, new manuel training and art teacher, assisted with carpentry.
Officers Best and Mann of the Immigration and Naturalization Service visited Lordsburg and announced they will be stationed there soon. A close watch on all transportation facilities in and out of Lordsburg will be part of the new defense program. Both officers will relocate with their families and expect permanent arrival next week.

A. W. Adams and M. W. Spence of the U S Navy spent part of the week in Lordsburg to recruit. They arrived Wednesday at noon and left Thursday evening, operating from the county agent's office in the courthouse. They plan monthly visits for two to three days, with advance notice in the Liberal.
The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office holds Max Romert in custody after a Las Cruces native was captured by a deputy setup. Bamert, once released from the New Mexico State Insane Asylum, is to be recommitted amid dangerous tendencies and transferred to Las Cruces authorities. Joe Williams, 24, of Long Beach California, is also detained over a car theft tied to Lordsburg with action pending by Hidalgo County District Attorneys next week.
Fourteen year old Tommy Hall son of Mr and Mrs Dee Hall was thrown from his pony at the race track while practicing for the Fl Paso Herald Post Kid's Rodeo. He was taken to Lordsburg Hospital with painful but not serious injuries and hopes to compete in the weekend rodeo.
Hidalgo County will gain another oil surfaced road under the 1941 42 highway program announced by Governor John F E Miles The Lordsburg Silver City highway is included along with Deming Hatch and a U S 70 connection at Tularosa The program plans at least 2511 miles of highway construction statewide over two years with 622 miles grade and drain 871 miles gravel surfacing and 161 miles oiling
Mr. and Mrs. George Jay of Douglas visited Clifton and Mor end Wednesday to view Phelpe-Dodge properties. They traveled with W. H. Francis, newly appointed General Freight Agent of the Southern Pacific Company, El Paso, and A. C. Bacon joined until Lordsburg for a regular visit.
Frank H Patton former Attorney General of New Mexico and longtime Silver City resident visits Hidalgo County to greet friends and discuss politics as he seeks to fit Jack Dempsey's echoes in Congress.
Republican candidate Maurice Miera canvassed voters this week as part of his bid for the governorship. The note recalls his six year-old run against the incumbent representative in Congress.
Several Lordaburg golfers plan to attend the Labor Day event in Deming. Eighteen hole qualifying rounds are set for Saturday with match play starting Sunday morning and continuing through Monday. Calcutta drawings occur Saturday night at Deming Country Club during a dinner meeting. dancing and entertainment follow.
Miss Nokia Rector, who spent the summer in Melbourne Arkansas and is en route via Deming to Lordsburg, will return this afternoon. Rector has taught commercial subjects for the past two years here in Lordsburg and will be in L. H. 8 for another year.
Mr and Mrs F H Daniels came back Sunday from a week long tour of New Mexico praised as the only state worth touring. Mr Daniels also recently returned from a month in his former home state Illinois.
Mrs. Polly Haering of Warsaw Poland wife of the American consul and her son George arrived in Lordsburg Wednesday. They were met by J J McMillen of Clifton brother in law to Mrs Haering. After a brief Clifton visit they will travel to Tucson for the winter.
The Scissorettes met at Mrs Verdie Brown's home on Friday afternoon. Each member gave a novelty pot holder to the hostess. Refreshments included ribbon sandwiches olives lemonade gelatin fruit cup and cookies for Mesdames Luree Smith Alva Brown Vera Craddock Jennie Nard Ada Mae Nard Eather Fullerton and new members Reba Smith Essie Bright Thelma Brigit and Eleanor Drake.
Mr and Mrs Percy Brown and children spent two weeks touring from Lordsburg to northern New Mexico fishing at Fe Vado Dam then to Peyasa Springs in Colorado for swimming and fishing. They then visited Salt Lake City Provo and Richfield Utah including Fish Lake before returning home with the Paynes.
Mr and Mrs Herff Wood and their daughter of Valley View traveled to Lordsburg for a social visit yesterday.
A Lordsburg touring party led by Paul Gants traveled to San Diego on Wednesday arriving at 6 00 pm after leaving at 6 20 am. The group included Willard Holt and Moa Fulton with visits to Professor Ballard and Lions Club banquets. Prominent coast officials credited Lordsburg as a tourism magnet with notable mentions in the Arizona Star and prominent media. The trip underscored Lordsburg being in the public eye and a key junction for travel publicity.
The Hidalgo Cleaners owned by Archie Cousland features a Hoffman plant with storage tank pressure filter and ten-suit washer. Expert operator J Garecia runs a 600-gallon extractor a steam and electric iron and the latest Hoffman presser all powered by electricity. Deodorized cleaning supplies complete the unit.
Leon Speer son of Mr and Mrs Claude Speer returns Wednesday from east Texas after a summer vacation visiting his grandparents Mr and Mrs C A Speer and other relatives in the area.
Rodanelle Rader, a 1999 Las Cruces Union High School graduate, acted in the film Forty Little Mothers while Principal Mayfield headed the department. The movie screened in Lordsbury this week, marking her local success in the cinema industry.
Mr and Mrs C Dunkerson of Banner Mine and Mr and Mrs Earl Dunkerson with daughter Earline of Bisbee Arizona depart September 1 for Kentucky to visit C Dunkersons parents. They will tour Mammoth Caves and Carlsbad Caverns. Dunkerson aims to bring his father to New Mexico for winter.
