New Water Pumps Ordered For Lordsburg City
Mayor Smith told the Lordsburg City Council a water shortage leaves the city with one pump. Two new large pumps at 3500 each will replace the failing units, with the old pump kept as a backup and installation expected by September first. Maxwell named Director of the near finished Special Events Center and will work from City Hall during completion.

Local Shooters To Compete At NRA National Shooting Champs
Three Lordsburg rifle shooters Dennis Estrada Albert Hinojos and David Esquivel will attend the NRA National Shooting Championships in Raton New Mexico from August 27 to September 4. Hinojos and Esquivel will compete in small bore rifle and small bore hunting rifle events while Estrada enters small bore rifle. The trio believes they have a better than average chance in their classifications.

A new building was constructed over the weekend for the Hidalgo County Fair with volunteers underwritten by M& M Hog Farm Massey Enterprise and Western Auto. Welders Jim Mortensen Clint Mortensen Randy Massey and Bob Allred joined residents from Animas Rodeo Lordsburg and Virden to help.

The Hidalgo County Fair weekend features a 10:00 A M parade on Saturday August 27 with lineup at West Second Street near the High School. Cash awards of 75 50 and 25 will honor floats and bike entries with trophies for top placers. Sheriff Lloyd Payne and Hidalgo County Jail received technical assistance from Blake Sutton this week to train staff and develop policies and procedures to bring the jail into compliance with federal requirements. Sutton, a lawyer and former officer, drafted a model policy listing jail duties and inmate requirements, with receiving officers recording events from intake onward and daily operations documented. The report will be issued to Hidalgo officials and the National Institute of Corrections, aiming to raise standards.
