Oronco Awarded Contract In Lordsburg Rehab Plan

City council held a special session to review seven home rehab bids under a Lordsburg Housing Rehabilitation Program. Oronco Construction Company was the sole bidder and all seven bids were approved with a $10,000 limit per home. Chavez outlined future home owner specs and HUD compliant guidelines to speed approvals. The council also backed a UDHE grant proposal of about 300000 for San Andres Corporation to enlarge vanyards and build a winery. A curfew siren will be reestablished for youth after curfew, with noon alerts as well. A water conservation land matching fund will be studied by a Smith-led committee for feasibility.

First Hidalgo County Fair Opens September 8 1950

The 33rd Hidalgo County Fair runs September 8 through September 10. The program begins Thursday at 6 p.m. with judging in the Exhibit Building and concludes Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with the Junior Rodeo. Local business firms and area communities helped organize the event.

Long Time Resident Passes Away at 79

Manuela H Barcenas 79 died August 16 1983 at Ft Bayard Medical Center. Born January 2 1904 in Hachita she lived in Lordsburg about 60 years from Hachita. She married Jose Barcenas in 1933. he died in 1976. Survived by daughter Adela Luce and three grandchildren. Rosary August 17 Heather Chapel 7 9 p.m. Funeral August 18 Heather Chapel officiated by Dennis Wagner. Pallbearers named. Burial Shakespeare Cemetery.

Traffic Fatalities in New Mexico July Report

The Transportation Department Traffic Safety Bureau reports forty fatal accidents in July yielding forty eight fatalities. Year to date totals reach 244 fatal accidents and 281 deaths. San Juan County leads with 44 fatalities, followed by Bernalillo 41 and McKinley 32.

City plans first block of repaired homes under grant

The City Corner reports a special meeting with contractors to review the initial group of homes for rehabilitation under the Community Development Block Grant. Bids are to be let soon, with David Chavez overseeing the project and exploring a HUD program to streamline housing rehab. A dust control complaint involved private Southern Pacific property near Short Park, but officials say dust measures were proper and will recur if needed.
