Lordsburg residents are urged to follow parking regulations after numerous complaints of improper parking. Citations will be issued for violations, with Chief Hall noting the common offense is parking the wrong way on two way streets, per state traffic code requiring right wheels within 18 inches of the curb.

Lordsburg Schools Open for 1977 78 Term

The Lordsburg area begins the 1977 78 school year with 1185 students enrolled as maintenance crews finish upgrades. New desks, chairs, and refreshed interiors arrive across elementary and mid school campuses, with Maverick Gymnasium receiving a fresh look. Ten new classrooms are slated with a Title I building grant, reshaping attendance centers and reorganizing grades for improved staffing and facilities.

ESAA Program Funded by Health Education Welfare

The Department of Health Education and Welfare funds the ESAA Title VII program through LULAC Council in Lordsburg. Funding totals 35637 dollars for 16 high school tutors to assist 1st through 5th graders with tutoring and free parental consent is required for children to participate. Adult classes in English and citizenship courses are also offered.

Flooding Hits Playas with 1.8 Inches of Rain

A sudden Aug 18 downpour drenched Playas with 1.8 inches in under two hours causing widespread flooding. The Lloyd Jackson house suffered the worst damage with the east end submerged 3-4 inches affecting carpet furniture and belongings. Roads were briefly impassable as mud and silt remained after the water receded.

Demming age 33 of Shreveport La was struck and killed on I-10 east of mile marker 25 at 12 15 am Thursday August 18 Investigating Officer Dan Harris said Demming was hit and dragged several feet by the vehicle a second car swerved and heard the thud but the hit and run vehicle did not stop as of August 25 had not been located A light blue car with front end damage is suspected any information on the vehicle would be appreciated

Burglary Suspects Held in Lordsburg Case

Suspects Eddie B. Aguilera and Ronald V. Salinas, both of Lordsburg, are in Hidalgo County Jail on $5,000 bond charged with burglary and larceny for an Aug 18 breakin of Ely's Mercantile on Railroad Avenue. Stolen items included a TV set, watches, necklaces, pens, and $38 in cash. more arrests and property recoveries are anticipated.

A Marketing Economics Institute study shows Hidalgo County's economy stronger with higher income and spending than many areas. Local merchants topped 1975 records with sales of 39.25 million, up 25.6 percent from the prior year while US gains averaged 11.2 percent. Net earnings reached 20.83 million, about 10,963 per household, driven by more dual income families and rising demand for cars, furniture, and appliances.

Quintana Minerals Corp of Tucson delays open pit copper mine near Hillsboro due to weak copper market and financing difficulties.
