The Lordsburg Housing Authority will apply for two grants the Community Development Block Grant and the Public Housing Drug Elimination Technical Assistance Program Grant per reports from the housing meeting held Tuesday August 13. There is no stated deadline for the Drug Elimination Grant submission as the authority will review conditions.
Samples from Freeway Chevron, Pyramid Village office, City Hall and Texaco Station tested okay. Lordsburg Well Number One showed fecal coliform but is not connected to the city system and has been out of service for eight months. The testing helps determine chlorine needs to bring the well into compliance.
Lordsburg introduces volunteer crosswalk guards at 3rd and Main to assist children crossing Main Street during school days from 8 00 to 8 45 in the morning and 2 30 to 3 30 in the afternoon. Guards Allen Jesse and Rob Beach receive police instruction and will aid Central and High School families. Law enforcement will enforce seat belt and speed limits around schools.
The week’s rental list features Misery with Kathy Bates in a Nelson Home Entertainment release at number two, Goodfellas starring Robert De Niro at number one from Warner R, and Edward Scissorhands with Johnny Depp (Fox Video) at number three. Also charting are Kindergarten Cop, L A Story, The Russia House, Reversal Of Fortune, Green Card, Look Who's Talking Too, Not Without My Daughter, and Postcards From The Edge with stars including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Steve Martin, Sean Connery, Jeremy Irons, Andie MacDowell, John Travolta, Sally Field, and Meryl Streep across various studios.
On Wednesday August 14 the Youth on the Go presented a nostalgic talent show at the cafetorium. Acts spanned music from the 50s to the 90s and performers grew more confident as the program progressed. Organizers thanked everyone for support and praised the hard work behind the success.
Dr Findlay Russell and Mr Barney Tomberlin will present a first aid and venom treatment talk for rattlesnake and other poisons at Lordsburg Fire Department on Main Street. They will show live specimens and venom milking, followed by slides and a Q A. The program starts 7 00 PM and is open to the public.
The Hidalgo County Fair invites pets of all kinds to its Annual Pet Show on Friday August 23 at 2 30 PM at the Fairgrounds. Ribbons award for largest smallest funniest and scariest with a Best of Show prize. Call Jill Cavaliere at 548 2328 for details.
A basic first aid and CPR course will start September 2 at 6 30 PM in Lordsburg at D T M S. Cost is 28 dollars per person and graduates receive a University of New Mexico certificate. Instructor W L Sanders. Applications at Lordsburg Ambulance Office.
