Clara Seipelmeyer Kimbley 99 longtime Lordsburg resident died Sunday August 14 at Sunshine Haven Nursing Home Visitation was Monday August 15 3 to 5 pm at Bacas Heather Funeral Chapel funeral service Tuesday 10 am Rev Herb Orrell with interment Mountain View Cemetery She was born November 4 1888 in Ellsworth Wisconsin owned a dress shop in Lordsburg for 25 years and moved there in 1932 Previously lived in Clifton Arizona Survived by two sons Bill and Marvin Kimbley three sisters Louise Haben Theresa and Marie Seipelmeyer and numerous nieces nephews four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren Bacas Heather Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements

Petition for Grand Jury Probes Hidalgo Social Services

A circulating grand jury petition in Hidalgo County reports over 200 signatures. Signers demand an investigation of the Social Services office, its workers and supervisors. The spokesman notes five percent of registered voters, about 140, are needed to convene a grand jury.

Bensley Sets National Championship Records in Shooting

Todd Bensley of Lordsburg won the Gold in Olympic Runs at the 28th International Shooting Championships at Prado Range California. He set National Championship records and earned a spot on the 1988 Olympic Team, also taking gold in mixed runs and silver in 10 Meter Running Game Target. He and Scott Sweeney, both at the Olympic Training Center Colorado Springs, prepare for the September 1988 Olympics. Sweeney is a 19 year old Tennessee junior.

DTMS To Have Closed Campus Policy Announcement

The district enforces a closed campus at DTMS. Students cannot leave after arriving unless they have an off grounds permit or lunch pass. Lunch passes are for those living within a short walk. Bus riders must remain on campus until the day ends.

Hidalgo County Fair Rodeo Promises Big Attractions

The Hidalgo County Invitational Ranch Rodeo for Fair Days 1988 will be held August 26 and 27 starting at 7:00 p.m. Events include Horse Catching Team Penning Calf Branding Team Roping and Wild Cow Milking. Thirty five sponsors from local and out of town merchants back the event. Admission is free.

Public Health Clinic Cancelled Immunization Date Shift

Hidalgo Public Health nurses attend meetings in Las Cruces on August 19 23 and 24 causing clinic disruptions. Immunization on the 24th is cancelled with the next session set for September 14 from 8 am to 3 pm. A Health Department booth with Buckle Bear promotes Safety Belt usage at the Hidalgo County Fairgrounds on August 26.

Gay Johnson Retires From Animas Schools

Mrs. J known as Mrs J retires after 26 years at Animas Schools serving grades 1 12 and as counselor. She helped with cheerleading NHS student council yearbook and game duties while living on a ranch south of Animas with her husband Alfred and three children Jacque G Ray and Tracey. She was named Citizen of the Month by Lordsburg Chamber of Commerce and holds NEA FFA Alumni and Omega Alpha memberships.

Brazilian Film Makers Visit Shakespeare Ghost Town

Video Films from Rio de Janeiro spent nearly five hours at Shakespeare Ghost Town on August 12 and 13 filming material for a seven hour USA themed documentary titled America. Producer Monika Aranha says they chose Shakespeare New Mexico Bodie California for authenticity and plan wide scope interviews with figures like Tom Hayden Kissinger Rockefeller and ordinary Americans.

City officials call for broad participation in the Hidalgo County Fair carnival and parade set for August 27 28. They urge residents and businesses to help with information at the Extension Office or Chamber of Commerce and announce city crews will clean Motel Drive and other visible areas before the event.
