Animas Public Schools Begin Fall Term Amid Upgrades
Animas Public Schools announce classes start Monday August 24 with registration for students August 21. Improvements include upgraded lunchroom, new baking and dishwashing facilities, updated auditorium with relined flame curtains, new buses for Rodeo Animas route, and a full faculty for grades through six. School dismissed September 4 for fair, with Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays noted. Easter break begins April 16.

Guard Unit Called For Maneuvers Near Ft North Carolina
Battery of Lordsburg led by Capt Jesus Estrada joins the 2nd Automatic Weapons Battalion of the New Mexico National Guard for maneuvers starting October 12 near Fort North Carolina. The unit is the sole National Guard participant in a test pitting the 82nd Airborne against the 11th Air Assault Division at Fort Benning. The 2nd Battalion, commanded by Lt Col Edward Hooten, includes units in Lordsburg Deming Silver City Cruces and Truth or Consequences. Battery C will convoy to Biggs Air Force October 11 and then be air lifted to South Carolina and the maneuvers site for two weeks.

Maurice W. Davis of Silver City New Mexico has been named vice president of Community Public Service Company by the board in Fort Worth on August 4. He continues as New Mexico Division manager with offices in Silver City and has a long career with the firm including posts in Kentucky Texas and New Mexico. He is a University of Kentucky engineering graduate and active in local civic groups.

California Youth Dies in Highway Crash Near Lordsburg
A 15 year old from Costa Mesa, Dennis Usher, died after a car carrying his family left N M Highway 90. His mother Mary Frances Usher, 35, and brother Robert Earl Usher, 16, were injured, with Tony 12 and Mary Elizabeth 8 treated for minor wounds. The driver said he dozed off. the family had been returning to California from Tennessee and misrouted near Deming before the wreck near Lordsburg. This was Hidalgo County’s first fatal highway incident of the year.

Bank President Morrison Resigns at Lordsburg Bank
The First National Bank of Lordsburg announces the resignation of NM Morrison as bank president effective soon. Ralph Burton, already vice president at the Alamogordo bank, will assume duties August 26. The Burton family plans to move to town and search for a house. Morrison joined Lordsburg in 1955 succeeding J A Foster, who moved to San Diego.

City Enforces New Dog Control Law Immediately
City Council voted August 6 to enforce the leash ordinance at once. Supt. Ted White said facilities will handle dogs picked up running loose, with vaccination, registration, quarantine and possible destruction. A four‑dog pound will restrain roaming dogs. penalties apply. Nine year old Chuckie Craig son of Mr and Mrs Will Craig suffered a broken left arm severed intestines pelvis fracture and cuts after his horse fell and trampled him during a visit with relatives in El Paso He received treatment at Providence Memorial Hospital and was slightly improved in the latest report.

Robber of Local Bank Sentenced To Eight Year Term
James Edward France, 28, was sentenced to eight years by U. S. District Judge Howard C. Bratton in Albuquerque after pleading guilty to robbing the bank on January 15. France, an ex convict from Bisbee Arizona, had most of the $12,595 recovered, with the toy pistol found near the hotel. He was earlier hospitalized with infectious hepatitis and had pleaded guilty in June to the related charge.
