City Council held a special session to address the non metallic chemical plant proposal in Lordsburg amid county city government tensions. Mayor Hill defended the county’s stance while noting concerns over a half million dollar CDBG request and seeking clarity on government roles and public opinion.
The annual Youth Appreciation Banquet hosted by the Elks Lodge will be May 2 at 7 p.m. at Lordsburg Elk's Lodge No. 1813 to recognize Hidalgo County students excelling in academics and extracurriculars. Guest speaker is Fred Zechman, NM State University football coach, noted for rebuilding the Aggies and coaching at Ohio State prior to NMSU.
A May 1 public hearing at City Hall seeks comment on intentions to request Community Development Block Grant funds to establish Victoria Homes modular plant and Non-Metallic Mining chemical plant in Lordsburg. Lordsburg School Board also meets May 1 at 7 p.m. in the board room.

Student Mayor Manuel Cortez and the students discussed mayoral duties, with thanks to Mr Goodman, Mr Moore, and school staff who arranged the event.

Von Bryant Jones 68 died Saturday April 21 at his Lordsburg home. Born March 23 1916 in Lordsburg to Felix R and Lola C Jones he lived here most of his life. He married Vivian B Hamilton in June 1947 and worked 34 years for the Southern Pacific Railroad. A Lordsburg Public Schools attendee and VFW member he served in the Army July 1941 to September 1945 in the Asiatic Pacific area and was honorably discharged. Survived by wife Vivian and sister Alice J Wayne. son Eddie V Jones preceded in death in 1969. brother George Malcom Jones a WWII prisoner of war. Funeral April 24 at Heather Chapel officiated by Rev. Johnny Mansell and Rev. Jesse Liles. burial Mt View Cemetery with pallbearers Harold Bishop Joe Rouse George Stone Homer Baird Woyd Stewart Bryant Winslow.
Kindergarten pre registration for the 1984 85 school year will be held on Tuesday May 1 1984 from 6 00 to 8 00 p m at R V Traylor. Children must be five before September 1 1984. Birth certificates and immunization records are required.
The Olympic Commemorative coins are now available at Western Bank in Lordsburg. Residents of Playas area may obtain one by notifying the Playas Branch of Western Bank.
At a special meeting the Lordsburg School Board presented the 1984-85 operating budget, accepted the policy manual, and approved personnel. Joel Price defined a school budget as financing the educational plan. The budget totals exceed three million dollars, with operational, three mill levy, and cafeteria components. Enrollment trends show 874 students in 1983-84 and 1,249.5 in 1975-76, reflecting a 30 percent rise across periods.
