Opposition to BLM Wilderness Inventory in Hidalgo County

The Southwest New Mexico RC and D council criticizes a BLM draft catalog of roadless lands in Hidalgo, Luna, Grant and other counties citing economic harm. The group plans to air objections at Western New Mexico University Thursday while urging broader planning and multiple use over restrictive wilderness designation. The draft inventory remains open for comment until June 9.

Hidalgo General Hospital Installs New Administrator

Hidalgo General Hospital in Lordsburg has named Fred Holden as administrator. Holden, a 1969 Kansas graduate with hospital administration experience in Texas and Kansas, arrived Monday to take over from Don Humphrey. HRM of Dallas contracted to run Hidalgo County’s facility. acting administrator Chuck Holland previously served in the role.

Bus Drivers To Receive Service Awards in Lordsburg

Seven Lordsburg School District bus drivers will be honored with Safe Driving awards for their service. Awards will be presented by board president Eddie Diaz Friday, with recipients Lewis Connor Vargas Maureen Thygerson Joanne Thygerson Etty Roper Frankie Kerr and Sandra Speir ranging from one to ten years. The district also plans to rehire certified staff for 1979 80 and discussed Fernandez and Trujillo plans for a 400 meter track at Dugan Tarango Middle School along with the football field lighting project.

Gas Skip Leads To Arrests By Local Officers

A gas skip in Deming led to the arrest of three Waco residents by New Mexico State Police and Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Department. Officer Dan Harris traced a 1979 tan T Bird at I-10 mile marker 33, yielding Danny Ray Harris 19 Donna Lynn Shirey 18 and Deborah Blount 18. All faced extradi tion to Texas with Hidalgo County help.

New Reading Remediation Program Opens at Animal Elementary

A Language Development Program funded by Title I ESEA at Animal Elementary aims to boost reading and language skills for third to sixth graders. Principal Robert Samson notes groups of eight meet daily for 180 days, using Sullivan Programmed Readers and self check methods to raise reading levels.

Animas High School Names Salutatorian and Valedictorian

Animas High School 1979 graduates named two top honorees. Valedictorian Cathy Caudle, daughter of Phyllis and E D Caudle, excels in athletics and student leadership with a 3.98 GPA and plans to attend Ricks College. Salutatorian G Ray Johnson, son of Alfred and Gay Johnson, leads as senior class president and participates in football basketball track FFA and 4-H with rodeo ties and NHS roles.
