The Lordsburg Lions Club will hold its annual broom sale Tuesday at El Charro cafe. Brooms and other household items, made at the New Mex School for the Blind, will be sold house to house by Lions and high school members to raise funds for sight conservation and glasses for needy students. Jack McGhee chairs the canvass. A Shaul of the State Department spoke to the club about the organization and aims.
Mr. and Mrs. Rex Kipp Sr of Lordsburg and Mr. and Mrs. De Dierman of El Paso hosted an aviation friends only breakfast near Lordsburg last Sunday morning. The event featured an authentic chuck wagon breakfast with ranch style fare including frijoles stewed apricots and biscuits.
Lordsburg residents Lester L. Yauger aged 61 and Harold Wayne Houser aged 20 died in weekend highway crashes. Houser's single car rollover occurred north of Santa Fe injuring passenger Robert Hessman. Yauger's car struck a trailer truck west of town, with the coroner citing unknown causes from injuries.
The Red Rock mission of the First Baptist church held ground breaking services Sunday April 19 for a new church. The mission began March 3 1957 by Robert Clark Arnold Nard and Mr and Mrs John Newsom. Enrollment rose from 27 to 49. Arnold Nard turned over the first spade of dirt. Local residents and many from Lordsburg attended as construction will begin soon.
John A. Anderson opened a law office Monday in the building once occupied by Judge Vearle H. Payne at 107 S. Shakespeare. A Kentucky native, he and his wife relocated from Green County to Lordsburg after moving from Las Cruces. Anderson, a 1956 graduate of the University of Louisville School of Law, was admitted to the Kentucky bar that year and passed the New Mexico bar exam in March.
Dr. E. J. Siemer, veterinarian of Silver City, will be in Lordsburg on May 2, 1959 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. to vaccinate dogs and cats against rabies. Vaccination on that date serves as a city license. later vaccinations incur the license fee plus vaccination charge. Fee is $2.50 per animal. Location will be announced Friday, May.
The style show at Legion hall drew a crowd as the Chamber of Commerce staged Cotton Day events for farm wives. Narrator Mrs. Evan Thomas introduced Desert Breeze Curio shop and Lehman’s store ensembles featuring cotton and silk dresses, jeans, and crease-free fabrics by Nelly Don Puritan and Mary Lee among others.
Jesus Acosta Morales a Mexican national employed by Fred Kerr Jr was arrested charged with forging a £10204 check cast at Jono s Recreation Hall. He pleaded guilty in Justice C Yu Brown court and was bound over to district court jailed on $2500 bond. Two more forged checks of the same amount were found along with a $464.44 check from Little Walker Farms.
The New Mexico Congress of Parents and Teachers with 45000 members held its 36th annual convention April 23 to 25 in Las Cruces. Local attendees included Mrs. Charles T. Babers president of the local unit and state officers. Distinguished speakers Dr. William G. Hollister and Dr. Kenneth Orland addressed workshops and policy discussions to strengthen PTA action and support for schools.
Cotton Day at the Elks' Hall on April 17 drew farmers away from fields delaying attendance but offered a valuable program. Guests greeted by N. M. Morrison and G. P. Jeffus registered by Mrs. Fannie Poindexter. experts from New Mexico State College spoke on soil care and crop production. Donations and gifts were presented to attendees with prizes and incentives from local merchants and businesses.
