CALL Citizens Against Lordsburg Landfill sponsors a Saturday bikeathon at the DTMS track. Participants collect pledges to oppose the proposed landfill, cycling starts at 8 00 AM with riders of all ages, an EMT on site, and sandwiches and cookies provided. contact Pam Sanders Toni Lowrey or Kathy Howell for details.
Several New Mexico municipalities join the moratorium against a proposed Hidalgo County landfill. Resolutions reject the notion of New Mexico becoming a wasteland by accepting unwanted refuse from other states, citing harm to residents and visitors. Cities and officials named include Lordsburg addressed samples, Texico Mayor Stephen Chaney, Capitan Mayor Benny Coker, Bayard Mayor David Conway, Grady Mayor Sunny Dunning, Melrose Mayor Bobby Bennett, San Ysidro Mayor Robert Garcia, Reserve leaders James Durham Rogerio Delgado Robert Garrison Glenn Turner, Artesia Mayor Ernest Thompson, and Corona Mayor Ernest Lueras.
In May 1989 the county will close all but its Animas landfill due to new regulations adopted by the New Mexico Environmental Improvement Division. Residents in Virden on both sides of the Gila River face changes as the county implements the plan.
Hidalgo County Commissioners meet in a special session at 5 00 PM in the Courthouse to review the proposed budget and its uses. Citizens may attend to provide written or oral comments and to ask questions about the entire budget as landfill rules and costs loom for Dona Ana County.
Mary Noland, longtime Lordsburg resident, died early Wednesday. Funeral arrangements are pending with Baca Heather Funeral Chapel. For further information contact the chapel or Fred LaMarca.
The Hidalgo County Senior Citizens Health Fair will be held Thursday May 4 at the James Baxter Civic Center 313 East 4th Street from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Open to Hidalgo County seniors 50 and up with free screenings for hearing vision glaucoma dental diabetes and blood pressure. Local organizations will set up displays and a slide presentation on skin lesions may be shown.
Ysabel Chavez 85 of Tucson died Tuesday April 11 at St. Marys Hospital. Visitation was Thursday at Bacas Heather Funeral Chapel with a Rosary at St Josephs Church. Mass of the Resurrection Friday at St Josephs. Interment Shakespeare Cemetery. Survived by daughter Lucia, sons Rudy and Benjamin, brother Raymundo, 13 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. Pallbearers and honorary bearers named.
Shakespeare Ghost Town presents an authentic re enactment of the 1881 hanging of Russian Bill and Sandy King. The fourteenth annual event documents research by Rita Hill and Janaloo Hill with a stage version by local volunteers at the Shakespeare site two showings daily April 22 and 23 near Lordsburg.
City employees passed Water II and Wastewater III certification exams, meeting state mandates. The Wastewater III requirements at the sewer plant, built in 1973 with grant funds, now have three level II water technicians and two level III wastewater staff. Additional staff will seek tests in Farmington in May.
