Legislative Budget and Staff Pressure in Capital

The capi tal legislature operates as a year long effort with combined interim budgets near 804 000 and a permanent staff budget of 185 000 while council funds total 292 000 for the new capitol building upkeep A range of interim committees report budgets from 3 671 to 338 000 for audits studies licensing and other duties The Legislature meets 60 days in odd years and 30 days in even years with a large staff and a powerful Legislative Council overseeing operations.

Houser Nominated as Elks District Deputy in New Mexico

Exalted Ruler Joe McCarty and Trustee J F Houser presented Lordsburg Lodge 1313 at the New Mexico State Fiks convention in Farmington April 13 15 to seek Houser as district deputy grand exalted ruler for southern New Mexico. Alex Coull of Las Vegas elected state president. Raymond C Dobson attended and backed Robert E Boney of Las Cruces as successor. The lodge plans a 6 30 pm dinner for brothers and wives on Saturday April 22 with nine candidates to be initiated at 8 pm by Willcox lodge officers.

The Lordsburg High School varsity choir will stage a variety show in the school cafeteria on May 15. Director Guy McLain led the group to an excellent rating at the State Music Festival last month, the highest in years. More details will appear in the Liberal at 4.

St Joseph's to Host Chicken Mole Dinner and Bingo

A chicken mole dinner will be served at St Joseph's Hall on Sunday April 23 from 1 to 6 pm with a ticket price of 1.25. A pair of handmade pillows will be given as a door prize to the dinner ticket holder. The public is invited to enjoy bingo and prize drawings.

Mack Pace Named Head of N M Coaches Assn

Lordsburg High School graduate and Hot Springs High School basketball coach Mack Pace of Truth or Consequences has been elected president of the New Mexico High School Coaches Association. A 1960 Western New Mexico University alum, Pace began coaching in Truth or Consequences and has served as assistant football coach for five years. He is married to Connie Yeurie of Hardsburg with two children, Steve and Stephanie. Pace was born and raised in New Mexico.

The local men's baseball team under Felipe Martinez meets every weekday at 5 p.m. at Short Park for practice. All men interested in joining are urged to attend.

The annual Hidalgo County Cotton Extravaganza will be held on May 27. Anyone 12 or older may enter a 100 percent cotton garment, judged on appearance rather than workmanship.

Mavericks Elect Track Co captains

Chard Richardson and Art Talavera were elected track co captains by Lordsburg Mavericks. Richardson competes in discus, shot put, javelin and high jump and holds school records in discus shot put and javelin. Talavera runs the board jump and the 440 680 and mile relays and holds the board jump record while the relay teams hold 440 800 and mile marks.

Lordsburg PTA to Receive State Convention Certificate

Lordsburg School PTA will receive a Silver Leaf Certificate at the State PTA Convention in Hobbs on April 20 21. Dorothy Stewart presides. The agenda includes National PTA legislation, state policies, and local PTA resolutions on education funding, juvenile protection, mental health, and child welfare reform.

Animas SWCD To Meet In Lordsburg Today

The Animas Valley Soil and Water Conservation District will meet Friday in Lordsburg. Topics include The Growing and Management of Sue Beans by Ed Hitson and Irrigation Water Management by Rodney E Newton. JA Swalbeit of the State Soil and Water Commission will attend. The district invites the Virden District.

Mavericks Second In Tiger Relays

The Lordsburg Mavericks earned a second place at the Tiger Relays led by Chad Richardson with 15 points and a host of near top finishes. They placed in 13 of 18 events, set one school record, and trailed only Los Lun as 65 points to 57. The mile relay featured Valdiviero, Jones, Ramíres, and Talavera. next weekend they compete in the Rose Festival at Glorasin.
