Tabled-Again By John Schimmel On UDAG Plant

City officials and county commissioners again tabled the proposed chemical plant project amid unclear environmental impact data. Chairman Bill Collins and city engineer David Chavez pressed for specifics on air water and soil effects while Non-Metallic Inc. leaders argued for timing and a solid by product claim. Robert Hay of Non-Metallo denied obvious issues and cited gypsum by product as harmless, comparing it to natural gypsum at White Sands.

Services Held For Former Administrator Frank C Gabriel

Frank C Gabriel born December 4 1904 in Champaign Illinois died April 10 1984 in Lordsburg age 79 married Marian E Wascher July 9 1927 with three children Robert 1929 Mary 1930 James 1943. He led multiple hospitals including Southwest Presbyterian Albuquerque Eastern New Mexico Medical Center Roswell Hidalgo General Lordsburg and helped form Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Mexico. He served as first president of the New Mexico Hospital Association and held other leadership roles. Funeral services were held April 12 1984 in Lordsburg with Masonic rites and burial at Sunset Memorial Park Albuquerque April 14.

Animas Board Releases 84 85 Calendar

The Animas School Board met on April 13 to release the 1984 85 calendar. Orientation starts August 24 with Christmas break from December 21 to January 1. Spring break runs April 3 through 8, and final day is May 24. Board approves bus supplement for Sylvia Walter adjustment raising from 25653 98 to 26017 98. Executive session follows to discuss personnel.

The Lordsburg Municipal Schools Board of Education will hold a special meeting on Wednesday April 25 at 7 00 p m in the board room located at 501 West Fourth Street Lordsburg.

Woodcutting To Resume First Of May In Mimbres District

Mimbres District Ranger Ron Bradsby announced that firewood cutting will reopen May 1. Firewood rises to five dollars per cord with a $10 minimum for two cards, and cutters must complete the removal record on their permit copy. Each household gets 10 cards, and commercial sales now go by sealed bid followed by oral auction.

Advertising Plans Are Finalized for Four County Area

A Silver City meeting with four county representatives and Bob Epstein finalized radio and television advertising for Hidalgo Grant Luna and Catron counties. Epsteins group reviewed placement brochures and billboards set to air in late April on El Paso Albuquerque and Tucson channels. Lordsburg billboards should be done by June or July promoting the town as a gateway for tourists sightseeing nearby sites.

Nick Franklin Campaigns In Lordsburg

Nick Franklin a Democratic Senate candidate spoke to Lordsburg residents accusing Sen Domenici of failing to lead in reducing the budget deficit. He faults the Reagan era for deaths in Lebanon and says Domenici backs the president’s agenda to dismantle programs aiding the disabled elderly and disadvantaged. The Lordsburg visit capped a 15000 mile New Mexico tour with plans to retrace before the June primary.

Tuesday Is Registration Deadline

Voter registration for the upcoming primary must be completed by April 24. Playas and Animas area voters may register with Netta Farran or Norma Preciado in Playas, or at Hidalgo County Courthouse in Lordsburg. The primary is June 5. Lordsburg residents without registration are urged to register at the courthouse.

City Corner Notice from Lordsburg on Public Property Prohibition

The City Corner reminds all that alcoholic beverages are prohibited on public property and in city parks with fines up to 300 dollars and 90 days jail. It cites Health and Sanitation, license plates, and nuisance abatement, urging enforcement and tenant notification with a 10 day removal window.

Runnels Visits Lordsburg Acting Governor Tour
