Sentencing Continues In Local Drug Trials

Sentences were handed down April 5 in August 1990 drug arrests. Carol Alvarado received three years with two years parole for distribution of methamphetamine, with conditions including a 21 day chemical dependency program and random urine tests. Genevieve Escobar’s trafficking charge resulted in deferred sentence and three years probation with 100 hours community service. Henrietta Gallegos was sentenced to three years with two years parole for attempted trafficking of heroin and must complete a 21 day program. Marty Meza received 18 months for marijuana distribution, with one year parole and restitution of 75 dollars to the crime lab and 50 dollars to the Sheriff’s Office Investigation Fund.

At the April meeting in Springerville coalition members discussed府 testimony in Washington to exclude Virden farmers from Gila River settlements and potential effects of Wilderness Areas. Families FIRST Reinstated at Health Department

The Families FIRST Program is reinstated to improve prenatal care and outcomes for Medicaid eligible women and health of Medicaid eligible children age three and under. It uses case management and education to reduce late prenatal care, low birth weight, infant mortality, and to strengthen links among providers while educating women about timely care and risk factors. It also eases the Medicaid eligibility process.

Kindergarten Pre-registration in Lordsburg

Pre-registration for next year's kindergarten classes will be held at 9 00 a.m. in the R V Traylor Elementary library on Tuesday April 23. Parents should bring birth certificates immunization records and health information for school officials. State law requires five year olds to qualify for kindergarten in the fall by September 1 1991.

Pennington Services In Minnesota

Gladys Pennington aged 69 a lifelong Lordsburg resident died April 16 in Collinsville Oklahoma. She is survived by her son Tommy Pennington and grandson Tommy Lee both in Minnesota along with nieces and nephews in Lordsburg area. Services will be held in Robinsvale Minnesota on Friday afternoon.

Earl L. Shehan 75 of Lordsburg died April 9 at Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City A memorial service was held April 15 at 6 00 PM at the Elks Lodge of Lordsburg He was born May 19 1915 in Cowley County Kansas a boilermaker for the railroad and a longtime Lordsburg resident since 1969 He is survived by 2 sons a daughter and 9 grandchildren with a previous daughter noted Funeral arrangements and cremation by Baca's Mimbres Crematorium through Heather Funeral Chapels.

Lordsburg-Hidalgo Library Declared Historical Site

The Lordsburg-Hidalgo Library, a southwest adobe building now fifty four years old, is designated a historical site. It has four book volume rooms, a check-out lobby, hall, two storerooms and two offices, with interior decor in a southwest theme. Travelers visit seeking Hidalgo County history.

Hidalgo County Hosts Desert Storm Parade and Ceremonies

A Saturday homecoming in Hidalgo County features a parade assembling at 10:00 AM at the National Guard Armory, marching to Lordsburg High School field for a program honoring Persian Gulf troops. Grand marshals are WW II veterans Fausto Noce and Chuy Padilla. program includes colors, flag rising, anthems, speeches, plaques, and a 21 gun salute.

Lions Club To Put Out Flags Saturday

The Lordsburg Lions Club will install flags Saturday for the Desert Storm and Desert Shield parade and ceremonies. Afterward the flags will be removed and stored for the next holiday. Proceeds fund glasses for needy children.

Desert Storm Return celebration parade in city

The city invites all residents to a welcome home for Desert Storm troops with a 10:00 am parade on Saturday April 20 1991. The route starts at the Armory on 2nd Street moves to Simpson Street Motel Drive Main Street then 3rd Street before entering the football field for presentations. Parking is allowed at the High School west lot.
