P w Club Elects Officers for Coming Year
The P w Club held its regular Thursday meeting at the cafe with 39 members attending. Driver Receives 30 Day Jail Term for DUI Case
Robert Stanley Medeiros, driver in a collision injuring six year old Linda Newell on April 9, was found guilty of driving while intoxicated. Police Judge C L Brown sentenced him to 30 days in jail and a $100 fine. He was briefly released to work at a service station before a committment order sent him back to jail. Linda Newell's condition remained guarded with a broken leg reported as the most serious injury.

Pamela Lunt an eighth grader at Lordsburg Junior High won the local spelling contest earning the right to represent Lordsburg in the Herald-Post Spelling Bee in El Paso on May 8 and 9 1959. Christine Black and Sammy Lehman were finalists with Black winning the written test and Lehman the first spell down.

The New Mexico Department of Public Welfare office moved today to the former Highway Dept Project Office at Fourth and Shakespeare. Case worker Nina McFarland said office hours will continue Friday afternoons from 1 00 to 3 00 p.m.

New Regulations On Replacement Well Drilling Passed
Senate Bill 150 signed by Governor Burroughs on March 9 1959 allows replacement wells within 100 feet of the original and in the same aquifer with the same water appropriation, under a prescribed notice and filing process. An emergency must exist to avoid crop or economic loss, with chances for legal challenge limited to damages and protests.

Jane Chase pledges Kappa Alpha Theta at ASU
Harriet Jane Chase of Lordsburg has been pledged to Kappa Alpha Theta at Arizona State University Tempe. She is a senior in the ASU College of Education majoring in elementary school teaching, and the daughter of Mr and Mrs Peter M Chase. She graduated in 1955 from Lordsburg High School where she was an honor student and editor of the annual publication.

Mental Health Talk Highlights Need for Local NM Clinics
Herbert H. Leibowitz of the New Mexico Health Department told Lions Club members at El Charro Cafe that mental illness is a medical illness and is increasingly curable with new drugs and therapy. He noted New Mexico has only a part time public mental health presence, with twelve psychiatrists statewide and most in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Roswell, urging local services to reduce statewide access gaps.

Local Fishing Party A Howling Success
A Cheyenne group led by Alvin Parker and Bob Tibbs left Lordsburg on April 7 for Angostura New Mexico for several days of fishing. Miller, Tibbs brother in law and chief fisherman, caught the first fish and reports a wonderful trip with all men good company though poor anglers, totaling 100 fish.
