City Council confronts illegal sessions and mayoral disputes

Councilman Clark Smith led Tuesday's meeting addressing illegal executive sessions and threats from Mayor Diaz. He demanded open dialogue between the Council and the Mayor and questioned Diaz's past use of executive sessions over per diem payments. Smith warned of possible Attorney General actions and disputed Diaz’s three page letter accusing him of rights violations and misuse of city equipment. He cited complaints about a welding truck at the Port of Entry and urged transparency for Lordsburg residents.

Treasurer To Get New Computers From El Paso Bid

The Hidalgo County Treasurer's office will buy two computers and one printer after the Board of Commissioners accepted a bid from International Computer Systems of El Paso for 3341.96 dollars. Treasurer Victor Ornelas stated that his department will proceed with the purchase.

Lordsburg Board to Hold Special Session on 1993 Budget

The Lordsburg Board of Education will meet in special session on Tuesday April 20 at 9:00 a.m. in the Board Room at 501 West Fourth Street to prepare the 1993 94 school budget. Parents of Lordsburg Municipal Schools students are invited to attend and provide input.

WNMU Orientation To Be Conducted Here April 23

A Lordsburg outreach orientation for potential students will be held April 23 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Lordsburg Civic Center. Sponsored by the Helping Hands Outreach Program for Women and Girls at Western, it covers admissions financial aid and support services. Saucedo Urges Reading Pilot to Help Lordsburg Students

Judge Manuel Saucedo told Lordsburg School Board that national test scores show local students lagging and urged a no cost pilot program of community volunteer tutors for 3rd grade reading. He cited 1991 92 Report Card and Redbook Magazine praise of local schools as models for improved comprehension and parental involvement.

Nine Finish Course For First Responders

Ambulance and Rescue trained a nine-member crew of first responders. Trainees include Dason Allen, Jane Dandy, Rich Malloy, Corinne Palossa, Linda Schultz, Clark Smith, Clarky Smith, Sherry Turner and Rosemary Varela. They must pass a driving test on April 17 to receive certification and assist on ambulance calls.

Suspects In Robbery Bound For District Court

Deming residents Douglas Walker and Christopher Washburn are bound over to District Court after preliminary hearings in Magistrate Court. Bond set at $15,000 each. The February 26 Freeway Chevron armed robbery in Deming and related Lordsburg heist tied to the pair. More than $200 in cash and cigarettes were stolen.
