Tonka the Chinese Chow dog of Capt Thos Brown earned praise when a prowler crept to a Smith Apartments window Saturday night. The dog growled, alerting Mrs Brown and prompting a police call as the intruder disappeared before officers arrived.
Mrs Margaret White of E Paxo was a guest of Lt Phillip Bond Sunday at the Lordsburg Camp. Bond recently completed a three day tour of New Mexico visiting the White Sands near Alamogordo and Carlsbad Caverns.
The enlisted men held a spring dance in the Post Recreation Hall Saturday. Cpl. Joseph Gatz and Pvt. P. H. Hamilton decorated the hall in patriotic colors. Col. and Mrs. James Parker led the grand march and the Post orchestra played Home Sweet Home at midnight signaling the finale.
Captain Thomas Brown and his wife left April 15 for a ten day visit in Hamilton Ontario to see Captain William Brown, a Canadian Army officer and brother they had not seen since 1907. The two had lost contact since World War I, with a long search finally ending when the War Department coordinated a letter reunion in January 1943.

Major Foster W. Burkett arrived at Lordsburg Camp on Monday in a deployment update.
Lt. and Mrs. Albert H. Ellis and son Albert Jr. arrived Sunday in Lordsburg. Lt. Ellis attends officers' school at Ft. Custer, Michigan, while Mrs. Ellis and Albert Jr. visit relatives in Georgia for five weeks.
Pfe Raymond H. McDaniels departed Sunday for a ten day furlough to Idalou Texas to visit his parents and friends.
Major W. P. Churchill left Saturday evening for San Antonio where he will meet Mrs Churchill who has been vacationing in Florida the past month. After attending to personal business in San Antonio they will return to Lordsburg.
Lt and Mrs F F Northman motored to Hot Springs Saturday evening. On Sunday they visited Elephant Butte Dam and the Carrie Tingley Hospital before returning to Lordsburg via Silver City.
Mrs. A J Warren wife of Capt Warren has been recovering from a severe flu attack since arriving in Lordsburg on Sunday. Lt and Mrs O J Smart left Wednesday for El Paso where Mrs Smart will enter William Beaumont Hospital for treatment of a back injury.
The officers' club ladies held their monthly luncheon Wednesday at 1 30 p m in the club building. Sweet peas decorated the tables with corsages on each place card. Mrs Rufus Crews presided as hostess with Mrs J F Hughes assisting. Grapefruit cocktail vegetable salad chicken potatoes and asparagus formed the meal with ice cream and coffee for dessert.
Worthy Grand Matron Lottie Howell visits Lordsburg Chapter No. 21 on April 8 with a school of instruction led by District Deputy Mary Baker. Dinner for 18 guests at Hidalgo Court Cafe follows, Rainbow Girls present a War Stamp gift, and an inspiring address is given.
Special Holy Week services begin Sunday at 11 00 Palm Sunday marks Christ entry into Jerusalem Pentecost follows. Harry Rosen stein to sing The Palma nightly 8 00 worship programs feature town musicians and edifying exercises. Friday 8 00 candle light communion no sermon observed. Rev F R Poage leads in quiet observance.
The B Sharp Music Club meets tomorrow at 8 PM in the Methodist Church. The Ewing family and two juniors Marilyn Kuykendall and Nancy Harwood will present the program with the Payne sisters aiding in a double piano quartet. Guest artists include reader Mrs. H G Rountree and vocalist Mrs. Percy Krewson.
Librarian reports March circulation of 7170 books and 81 magazines. New titles include See Here Private Har grove Barrriers Down They Were Expendable and Experiment Perilous. Victory Book Campaign collected 140 books donated to Lordsburg Internment Camp.
After announcements by Mrs. James Parker guests played bridge and Po Ke No. High bridge score went to Mrs. Edward Sturms while Mrs. J O Safford won the Po Ke No prize. Each winner received a leather ration book cover and go data book. Officers and enlisted men of the Lordsburg camp donned summer uniforms Thursday, April 15, reflecting a seasonal change in attire and parade routine for the unit.
Earl McKeehart, field Scout executive, said the Hidalgo County finance drive will occur on Tuesday April 20 and conclude that day. District finance chairman S H Gass and Hon H H Vearle Payne lead the effort with a steering committee meeting at Hotel Hidalgo. Troop 121 and Troop 319 activities are highlighted as they prepare to win the Hidalgo Luna trophy for three straight wins.
Lordsburg praises Supt Tom J Mayfield as a leading speaker at a major educational conference in Santa Fe. The theme centers on School Today and Tomorrow and Post War Planning with Mayfield addressing Teachers Salary Schedules and the teacher shortage.

Miss Mildred Swaggart and Miss Nellie Jo Swaggart arrived from El Paso for a visit with their aunt and uncle Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Been. Mildred plans to return to FBI work after vacation while Nellie Jo will take a Cochise County Clerk assistant post in Bisbee. A spaghetti dinner at La Fiesta honored the guests with the Been and Jones families attending.
Postmaster Montague promotes a new one cent green stamp depicting the torch of liberty held aloft by a woman. The inscription reads Freedom of Speech and Religion From Want and Fear signaling wartime era concerns.
The Baptist Missionary Society gathered Wednesday with Mrs. R. K. George presiding. Mission Study Day featured a program conducted by Mrs. Edgar Taylor.
The Hidalgo County Chapter Red Cross Production Corps reports for the quarter ending March 31, 1943. Eighty-two volunteers contributed 796 sewing hours and 1127 knitting hours, producing items including 101 girls slips 82 girls blouses 15 kit bags 1 baby quilt 26 helmetas 16 scarves 5 sweaters 1 pair gloves and 6 wristlets.
Vearle Payne, majority leader in the New Mexico House, is back from Santa Fe and can resume his law practice with a clear conscience after a session that saw about half the usual number of laws enacted and some obsolete statutes repealed. The majority leader bears more trouble than the speaker, as he is the perpetual peace-maker in a tough two year legislative cycle.
A sophomore party was held in the high school art room last Friday evening with about 26 students present. Cokes and sandwiches were served, and Mrs. Helen Robertson was noted as the close sponsor.

Malcolm Voswell, former Lordsburg student, reports to his grandparents that he has been made a lieutenant in ROTC at Austin High School in El Paso. He and Crawford Mearne, ex Lordsburg band leader, both play oboe in the El Paso Symphony Orchestra, where they have been for some time.
On the highway to the army camp dirt has stirred and loco weeds sprout from latent seed. Camp officers, an unusually fine group, cut down and burned the plants, destroying existing growth and preventing future seed spread. Their action is commended as highly commendable.
L L Travis of the Banner Mining Company met with Supt. FE Bowman to discuss ongoing operations. Travis backs the Hollandsworth Drilling Company, tallying 122 wells drilled for others in a year and noting vast East Texas activity. The firm gained attention in 1942 for Texas oil milestones amid labor shortages and high costs.
The Monday Bridge Club gathered last Monday at the home of Mrs Paul Hudson. Attendees included Miss Lola Mae Atkinson Exa Darton Helen Chase Nancy Chase Bess Johnston Mrs Chloe Coffman Mrs Hazel Chase and Mrs Hudson.
Mrs. John Bradford hosts a Thursday birthday party for her daughter Tetty Bradford. Seven children attended as guests, Easter color decor, a large punch bowl centerpiece with bunny figures, and yellow purple bonbons. Punch and birthday cake served to Patricia Balch Ellen Hughes Barbara White Merilyn Hood Merna Fireman Nita Fireman and Nancy Harwood.
The Friday Bridge Club met that week at the home of Mrs. W. I. Winters. Members included Mrs. L. B. Robinson, Mrs. Forrest Sanders, Mrs. St. E. Buvens, Mrs. C. B. Austin, Mrs. Faye Clayton, Mrs. Donald Johnson, and Mrs. Winters. Mrs. W. W. Scofield was a guest.
The Wednesday Sewing Club met this week with Mrs Allan Hood. Members attending included Mesdames WP M Chase Elbert Coursey F McWhorter J Poindexter Alton Powell L H Robinson and Ben Cochran.
The Pythian Sisters met Monday evening in the K of P Hall. Mrs L P McHalffey donated a handmade quilt for display by the sisters in the near future.
The Maverick band led a downtown parade in uniform to boost Hidalgo County wartime bonds. Local committees led by C. C. Fuller and Pr. M. Meinlie coordinate drives with prizes, free dances, and events through April 18 to reach a $163000 quota for the Second War Fund.
Price clerks are being trained to work with each rationing board in the state. The plan aims to aid merchants and the public in understanding price controls by providing a local contact for questions and problems, addressing a gap in the OPA network.

Mr and Mrs C J McFee and sons Douglas and Dreamble Lee and H T Clark of Houston arrived last Thursday for a visit with Mr and Mrs Bramble Ownby. Mrs McFee and Mrs Ownby are sisters and Mr Clark is their uncle.
Mrs Elbert Jones hosted the N and T Club at her ranch home Tuesday. Attendees included Mesdames H L Scofield, W P Hill, A L Green, Charles Fuller, G W Trimble, P M Chase, F H Sinner, J H Clark, and guests Mesdames Clay Fuller, Alan Koff, Patsy Crouch, and Master Curt Puller.
Mary Jo McWhorter Louise Noce and Preida Coffey spent the week in El Paso with local engagements and gatherings highlighted by social events and community meetings.
The Woman's Club party last Monday drew 46 ladies. Bridge and poker were played with Mrs. H Bryant taking first at bridge and Mrs. KR FE Buvena second. Mrs. J C Saffold won first in pokeno. Prizes were donated by Dr. H H Conder, Mrs. Ella Brown, the Style Shop and Dr. C B Austin.
The USO hall will not host a dance next Wednesday due to special camp activities. About 50 people attended the previous Wednesday’s dance, and the club rooms will remain closed on the upcoming date.
Mrs Sylvia Lehman hosts Lordaburg Business and Professional Women's Club on April 22 at 7 45 PM. A covered dish dinner precedes the business and program arranged by Miss Exa Barton and Mrs Edith Wilson.
J. L. Graham once of the 85 Mine Staff and now a Spencer Texas banker and Citizens Bank cashier visited Lordsburg this week. Thursday noon he had Bias Noce and Secretary Holt as lunch guests. He commented on the town's growth and prosperity.
Mrs. Carol Dabbs daughter of the late Charles Conner and Mrs Conner married Cpl. K E B Eaton Saturday afternoon at the Lordsburg Methodist Church parsonage officiated by Rev. F R Poage. Eaton is stationed at the Lordsburg Internment Camp. the couple reside with Mrs Mattie Conner on East 6th Street.
Claude Allen Proun arrives by morning train on Thursday to visit his parents Mr and Mrs A V Broun. His rating is 3d class eclectician and he is on a nine day leave from the San Diego naval station.
The Woman's Christian Service Society of the Methodist Church meets this afternoon at Mrs. Elbert Coursey's home with Mrs. James Baxter as co host. Mrs. Tom Clayton leads the devotional and Mrs. J B Robinson teaches the lesson.
