City employees and labor leaders pressed for adherence to the newly adopted pay scale at a Monday council meeting. Mayor Clark Smith cited a severe financial problem and possible $100,000 dispatch and jail costs, warning that city bankruptcy could be at stake and debts fall on Lordsburg if woes persist.
Hidalgo County employees appear poised to form a union as 20 workers have signed with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Union. The union needs a simple majority to organize, accepts salaried workers not in leadership roles, and joining is voluntary. County officials say signatures will be verified with County Manager Tommy Anderson as meetings with union representatives proceed. In unrelated commission business, March actions on a rodeo road through Miller Ranch to Scholes property prompted updated viewer appointments and anticipated discussion at the April meeting.
City officials respond to a reader letter opposing dumpster scavenging. At the April 11 council meeting, plans for stricter enforcement were approved, with the police department to issue warnings for first offenses and citations thereafter. Residents are urged to report scavenging observed in dumpsters or landfills.
A jury found Jerry Isiah guilty of first degree murder and guilty of attempted first. The verdicts come after a trial that began last Wednesday in the Greyhound Bus incident. The jurors ruled Isiah as mentally ill on the murder count.

Jake Martinez a Democrat and Vice President of Marketing for Del Tec Management Group in Silver City declares his candidacy for Hidalgo County Commission District 1 currently held by Fausto Noce Sr. He stresses local roots and aims to create jobs and drive economic development to ensure his children have solid career options.
Hurley mayor David Diaz who has led the city for 14 years declared his candidacy as a Democrat for District 39 state representative. He aims to strengthen the economy of the southwest through industrial development and job creation amid expected funding cuts. He emphasized understanding local needs.
Lordsburg School Board discussed selling the vacant Enrichment Center to Bill Pease who seeks to run a 24 hour career training facility for the homeless. Zoning restrictions and a 300 foot notification rule were raised, with concerns about impact on students, schedules, and community opposition.
The Lordsburg Municipal School Board will meet Monday April 18 at 7 00 p m in the Board Room to review the proposed budget for the 1988 89 school year.
